Fish Bowls...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm glad to see that we have pretty much come to a consensus that bowls are cruel. I remember when "Finding Nemo" came out. I began hearing the stories of parents trying to put the SW clownfish in bowls. It makes me sick.

Other cruelties I have seen is bettas put in small bowls at the BOTTOM of an aquarium with the bowl upside down with NO AIR. Don't these idiots know that bettas breath atmospheric air?

Bettas have been found in the wild in hoofprints in the mud that are filled with water but I hardly think that this is a good rationale to keep them in tiny bowls. Keeping a goldfish in a bowl is a bigger sin. :nilly:

In Finland we have some laws about keeping aquarium fish but unfortunately the minimum water requirement is only an additional recommendation and not an actual law. :(

"Akvaariossa on vähintään 1 litra vettä kutakin enintään 5 cm mittaista kalaa kohden ja vähintään 4 litraa vettä kutakin enintään 10 cm mittaista kalaa kohden. Akvaariossa on vettä kuitenkin aina vähintään 40 litraa."

Translated:
"The aquarium has to have at least 1 litre of water for each fish that is under 5cm in lenght and at least 4 litres of water for each fish that is under 10cm in lenght. However there has to be at least 40 litres in every aquarium."

I won't sell golfish to people with bowls, bettas once I have a good talk with them, but not golfish. But if you can into get some of the goldfish for your Ps, PBass, or w/e I would sell them to you. I would also tell you to wean them off ASAP but I would sell them to you. It seems hypocritical, but atleast they aren't being tortured.

My betta is in a 2.5 gallon tank and i still feel pangs of guilt every once in awhile about it being too small. I always read that they are not very active fish, but my fish swims around all of the time.

I wouldn't worry too much. Unless you have the means to build a rice paddie :) Then you could feel good.. :)

Bettas can be found in the foo prints of cattle in rice fields in thailand. I dont think that any fish should be kept in a cup, but a betta can be kept in a properly managed "micro-enviroment" They dont use their gills for respiration, they go to the surface and cature air and store it in an organ in their head called a labyrinth. I to dont think that it is the best place to live, but many people would not be as "in to" fish as they are if it werent for that "Siamese Fighting Fish" they got in a cup when they were a yougster.

Fish keeping may not be as popular witht the next generation if they dont have a place to start, my first fish was a oscar in a 27 gallon tnk when I was 10, but not every one is that lucky. you must take the good with the bad. after all how many kids got there first goldfish in a 90g tank? not to many, most were in a bowl.

gotta start somewhere, most kids today would rather have a cell phone than a cichlid, or a gameboy before a gourami. so where does the next flowerhorn child come from? the kid with the betta in a fish bowl. lets just hope he or she gets educated and carries on the hobby

BTW my mom has kept a feeder fish alive in a 1.5g bowl for 7 years.

Bettas are air breathers, my gf had her betta in a lil 5.5 gallon purpel tank and it couldent swim up to the surface due to the filters current. So we put him in a huge vase, and is doing amazing now. She just bought a blue lobster tonight, and stole my baby tigerbarb and put them in her small 5.5 gallon.

WOW I bet thats a happy little fish!:screwy:

Fish bowls suck, it would kinda be like keeping a dog in a kennel for it's entire life, of course there are ***holes who do that to

the only thing fishbowls are good for are aquatic planters. I have some java moss in my old 1/2G bowl and it's doing fine.

keeping bettas in a bowl is bad, their life will be about a year or two shorter than if you gave then a REAL aquarium.

keeping a goldfish in a bowl is like keeping a cow in your bathroom.
