Fish that can eat fish as big as themselves??

Esoxlucius was never my first choice for my username. My favourite fish is the European Perch, but "Perca Fluviatilis" doesn't have the same ring to it that Esoxlucius does.

Besides, in general pike aren't that bad I suppose, it's just these young upstart jack pike that can be a bit annoying at times, especially when they try to eat you, lol.
I have a feeling that the Jack pike is the UK equivalent to a chain pickerel here in the states. The okay, and sometimes annoying little cousin to the northern pike and musky that also never fail to destroy and cut off your $20+ bass lures. And even if you do manage to get your lure you better be ready to get bit trying to pry it from the jaws of Mr Pickerel. ?

Lol, I'm pretty sure that the British pike (Esox lucius) is the equivalent to the North American pike (also Esox lucius)...they're the same fish. Up in my neck of the woods, pike are usually referred to as "jacks"; small ones like the one that assaulted our Esox are nicknamed as "hammer handles" or "snot rockets". Didn't realize that the term "jacks" was used in the UK as well; I just assumed that was strictly a colonial thing...:)

Most people locally look down their noses at them; personally, I love 'em, one of my favourite angling targets.

Gotcha. I assumed a jack pike was a smaller species lol. Funny, I’ve never heard of people calling pike “jacks”. I’ve heard snot rocket a ton of times. Northern Pike are a pretty popular fish to catch down here. They’re one of my favorites as well. It’s really chain pickerel that have the bad reputation. Are there chain pickerel up in Canada?

They're in the Maritime provinces, and I think also eastern Quebec. None in Manitoba, and I never heard of them being in Ontario when I lived there either.

In Ontario, I never heard Pike being called "jacks"; in Manitoba, that's what just about everybody calls them. I also never heard "snot rocket" until I came to this province as well.

When I was a kid, the official name of the Walleye, in Ontario, was Pickerel. That's the term that was used in all the government fishing regulations and other literature. You can imagine the confusion that caused when American anglers came over to Canada to fish. Even today, long after the Ministry of Natural Resources begrudgingly agreed to change the official moniker, most older anglers still call Walleyes "Pickerel".

Trust the gummint to manage to take something as simple and pure as fishing...and confuse the crap out of anyone trying to do it...:)
