Fish you would love to keep but can't.

I would like to keep many Amazon fish from discus to geos, but they don't do well in my hard tap water. I tried geos for a while, though survived and even grown to large size, they were disfigured by HITH which is worse than death.

I would also like to keep many large CAs such as Midas, Parachromis and Herichthys species, but I don't want to maintain a huge tank to house them. These tank busters need at least 300+g tank to look good and behave naturally. I have no interest in keeping a solo wet pet and much prefer keeping a community to appreciate their interactions and breeding behavior. That constrains me in keeping only medium size fish up to 10 inch maximum in my 75 to 125 tanks. I just sold my 14 inch Vieja which look cramped in my my 125 even though he is a gentle giant and never bullied small fish.

Water Changes for Discus is insane, My favorite freshwater fish and i don't even keep them lol because of that. All my attempts haven't been successful, The Discus owners seriously change their water pretty much everyday 50% or more. A lot of people think that's actually insane but it's what they need in order to thrive and get bulky and huge.

Haitiensis, beani, istlanum, rtm, snakeheads, all big cats, silver arowana... the list goes on, because basically all these fish are illegal here (except the cichlids and aro of you have a permit. But people pay 3k for a baby rtc or tsn. 1k for a baby silver aro. Around the $500 mark for snakeheads. And might I add, all those fish are illegal so when your paying that money your also risking a huge fine and the fish being destroyed. And haitiensis, beani, rtm and istlanum have all died out here.

Oscars. Yeah pretty boring choice but I really like them now as I did when I was a little kid visiting the fish stores. I'm now maxed out with 75 and 125 gallon tanks and no place to put an Oscar in the 125 due to fish stocking and decorations (big driftwood and a couple live plants).

One day I'd love to keep another geophagus brasiliensis (maybe even a pair) but I don't have a tank big enough for another one and considering how quickly Horrace (my last one) grew I doubt that I'd be able to obtain a tank I deem big enough in the small amount of time it takes for them to reach 1'+ :( one day if I can ever afford a tank with a footprint the size of my lounge room, that's what I'll be putting in it.

My hubby fantasizes about striking it rich and having a tank big enough for a wobbegong or two to live comfortably... Something tells me we will never be that wealthy lol

I have the space, but would need to make a new entrance to get a proper sized tank into the basement. Even getting the glass inside in parts would be impossible.

Maybe one day ....

Although my main interest in this hobby is cichlids, the best fish I ever had was a marine porcupine puffer.
I know one day I will have to get another puffer.
Unfortunately I think an Mbu is always going to be out of reach for me.

What's the big craze about Puffers? Don't they just sit there and do nothing? Or is it quite the opposite?
