No, they taste great!!

But like I always say, if every body was to release all bass landed, freshwater fishing would be WAY better. That's just my opinion and I stand by it!!
Think about it tho CF if you keep no bass and only bluegill and other species, the Predator prey realtion ship will become unbalanced leading to the death and or stunting of the bass. If things are to work both need to be kept. Now 5 is a little much depending on size I think 3 would be better and there should be a slot limit.

I have to disagree with you there, the lake i fish used to be only catch and release due to people being big on that here but its destroying almost every other type of fishing at the lake. The catfish stocks are going down, there is no shad even though we stock 5000 a year, bluegill are declining, no one has caught a crappie in about 5 months. The bass are also stunted due to lack of food and to much competition. A small bass needs a lot more food than a large one. Last summer i saw a school of 50 12oz-1.5lb bass just cruising. For a healthy fisherie selective culling just ruins the balance.

Bass population should ony have a small effect on catfish. If anything the catfish are the ones eating all the food, even the bass are food for a hungry catfish with a big enough mouth. ;) with less bluegill this means that the bluegill can reach larger sizes resulting in the best lakes to fish for bluegill.

Here is my opion:
In most cases depending on area and or State, there should be a minium size limit of about 12 inches to not greater than say 18 inches on a LMB with a 2 per person, per day limit. Starting from say the second week after the end of there known breeding season until say a month prior to there breeding season. During breeding season there should be a NO KILL, catch and release in effect. 2 Bass per person is more than enough for a family of five to eat as a meal.

I personally don't like the way LMB taste but my father does so I will from time too time bring home Bass for him. I don't care who likes or doesn't like that I do this for him. As long as it is legal to catch and keep fish from the area in which I take them!

As far as anyone feeling that we should kill all the rest of the fish except LMB and allow the Bass to be piled atop one another in lakes, ponds, creeks, streams, canals and rivers etc., This is just nonsense without diversity in the lakes, ponds, canal etc., you would have less than what you have now, as the LMB would then have to consume more of there own to survive and in the end would end up killing itself off trying too survive!

Everyone stated some great facts and opinions but us as humans we have a problem with moderation!!

So in turn we have alot of lakes with alot of fish in them but only a hand full of BIG bass.

"Likestofish"- Nobody catching crappie in the last five months is nothing out of the
ordinary. I dont know about ur area but crappie fishing peaks in the spring. Ive seen times in that season that you can land 20-30 in a very short period of time but as the water temps start to go up it seems as if the crappie fishing starts to decline. By mid summer I only hear about good crappie fishing early in the morning. Then it booms again in the fall for a few weeks.

Thats one thing about fishing that reallys blows me away. Ive been on very small lakes where I know that the crappie population is CRAZY(200-500) but in the summer you would think that they werent in the food chain at all.

You would think but there arnt many to begin with and the when they spawn ive seen bass decimate the catfish fry. Also about the bluegill there are the big ones but there arnt many as there used to be.

In my neck of the woods Crappie fishing is mainly done in the early spring mid March through end of April. Largest Crappies I've ever caught where Black Crappie approx 14~16 inches.

Anyway here's part of todays catch, all in all 32 Bass and 1 Bowfin where caught today.

Here's the above fish on the scale 3.7lbs turned out to be the days lunker.

First two fish where my first catches and then Jersey Jack bang in the lunker and then I got another and the day just went like that back a forth. This lake turned out to be ok, not great or anything but ok. Tomorrow I'm on my own again, so things should be limited unless I shoot out to the State Park or something but I also have so last minute shopping to do.:irked:

Afew more too come in next post!

Very true this is because the crappie move to different habitats often being near deep structure or suspended in open water, the best way for summer and early fall crappies is trolling. In winter look for whats left of weed beds they like to be near structure.

Im not saying we catch a lot a occasional few are caught and about now we start getting them in deeper water, but not as much, the numbers have gone down a lot. Some of the old timers tell me they use to catch at least a few crappie whn they used to go trolling but not anymore.
