They make dough baits you can put on a single hook. Just use a sinker that keeps the line from moving/drifting.
you could also try some cubes of bread if they like to hang by the surface.

Heres a slab of crappie from 2 seasons ago

Nothing comes close to catching big bass but the fight carp put up is very fun.

I have to agree with cichlid fiend on the bass vs.carp issue; big bass are way more fun than carp to fish for.

I caught a 28", 8 pound carp on an earthworm during Memorial Day weekend at my camp on the Allegheny River, and it was a much easier fight than I expected for a fish of it's size (but it was a nice addition to my pond for algae control :D).

If you want a big bottom dweller to fight, then maybe give catfish a try.

As for carp, it all comes down to where you catch them and how they fight in different locations. And different locations they do fight differently as I've experienced them. I fish for carp a lot, and the carp here in California rivers like the Sacramento Rivers and are dead on powerful. I've had results of them breaking 25lbs test. Normally that's because I don't have enough time to loosen up the drag and carp here run automatically once they are hooked. I use braid line as my main, 30lbs-50lbs test and a minimum of 12lbs test leader of maxima. But then im not relax when I hooked a carp here on 12lbs test, at least a 15lbs test. I've had monsters here that stripped about 100 yards off my spool...biggest I've caught to date was 41" weighing in at 36lbs. I rate them 3rd hardest fighting fish I've ever fought for size comparision compared to other fish. Salmon comes 2nd and the mighty White Sturgeon comes 1st.

I've caught a 25" bass and it fought nothing near compared to a 22" carp here. Maybe its different at your guys location...who knows.

My carp rod is a 4ft micro lite with 4lb test....hows that for a fight? :D

Hmm... good point, BIG_ONE. Maybe it also depends on the method of hooking the carp; I caught mine on an earthworm most likely after it sucked it into it's mouth while searching the bottom for food. It probably also has to do with the time of year and what the fish are currently feeding on.

kiwis, it sounds like you're asking for a broken pole or at least line if you hook into a really big carp lol.
