No, I never heard of that spot.

Have you ever fished greenwood lake? Half of it is in NJ and the other half is in NY. I never been there but I here it's a very good lake.

I have been to Green Wood Lake, and while they allow boats on the lake forget about using a motor. By mid July the lake is engulfed with lily pads and mad weeds. Though I have never fished it before, I have heard that there are some nice Bass in it. There are also many other nice spots to fish in that area, on foot by boat OMG there are many great spots to hit over that way. Without a boat and using waders one can fish the Ramapo River for Trout, CP, Bass and a bunch of other fish.

Nope, never heard of it.

I have been looking for a good freshwater lake not too far from me...
My main haunt is Clove Lake, scarcely stocked Largemouth bass (caught 2 in my life, but then again they're so rare there I don't even bother), stunted Sunfish, Shiners and 2 kinds of Bullhead.
There's Prospect Park, which has 2 kinds of pickerel, plus Bowfin and a great variety otherwise, but for some reason I can never catch anything but young-of-the-year Bass and a few Bluegill...

What? where, when was the last time you fished Prospect Park? I've live for most of my life close enough to PP that I could be on the lake, in under 15 minutes. There are No Bowfins in that park at least not for the past 40 yrs. In another thread I had some guy try and tell everyone that there are Oscars and 10 Pacus in PP lake. NO! I don't think so. But there are a few nice Bass and many small to medium and a few monster Blk Crappies in it. And now in the upper lake that they finished redoing there are CP, but to the best of my knowledge they don't allow fishing in the upper lake. And there are Blk and Brn Bullhead cats in the lake and Snapping turtles, and Frogs galore and blue gills and sunfish and there used to be Red Freshwater Lobsters too. But there along since caught and eaten by many of the people that frequent the people these days.

It's illegal to keep fish in Prospect Park, lol
In, I believe, 2003, Redfin and Chain Pickerel were stocked to control the Sunfish population. And last year I netted what looked vaguely like a baby Bowfin...

Anyway, the main lake, by the boathouse, is unfishable now due to an overabundance of duckweed, covering the whole surface of the water. I only hope that the rest of the lake doesn't meet the same fate.

have you ever targeted bowfin in there to see if theres any in there? If not then I doubt you'll catch one, there even hard to catch if thats what your fishing for.

Tell that to the ones down here........My biggest was a little over 13lbs.......

Prospect park lake supposedly has the 2nd highest population density of Largemouth Bass in NYC, next to Silver Lake. But the biggest Bass I've ever seen in that lake was the tagged fish released at the Macy's contest.
My personal best Bass in Prospect park would be a eaten-without-a-secon-thought-fish to most of the fish you have posted CF
And my personal best Bass is 12". Hey, I'm a saltwater guy ;)

It's illegal to keep fish in Prospect Park, lol (But only since July 2006) this is rarely enforced. City parks dept doesn't have the authority to truely enforce this. That would be Fish & Game Dept.
In, I believe, 2003, Redfin and Chain Pickerel were stocked to control the Sunfish population. And last year I netted what looked vaguely like a baby Bowfin... (I believe Asians and Mexicans where stocked in the area to control Blue gills and Sunfish, not Chain Pickerels).

Ok to the best of my knowledge the lake at PP hasn't been stocked or restocked since the early '70'sm because of lack of funding.

Anyway, the main lake, by the boathouse, is unfishable now due to an overabundance of duckweed, covering the whole surface of the water. I only hope that the rest of the lake doesn't meet the same fate.

I find that this makes for a much beeter fishing area for top water lures, especially in the Spring. This duckweed doesn't generally grow beyond the Iceskating Rink.

Bowfins are the easiest fish to target, except when fishing for them with rubber worms you have to catch them in the corners of there mouth when they turn otherwise the hook wont set, or the big ones will break a hook by biting it. They'll hit just about anything moving/alive or not, I have kept Bonfins as pets and I have fished for them in Florida, if there around and there hungry they'll hit anything, including fish almost there size. FYI for those that wanna try eating a Bowfin there body is more like a shell than scales andif left in the frig they'll turn to mush in a matter of a few hours. They need to be bled, and then boiled and made into fish cakes.

I'll have to agree cause the report clearly says that there is in fact bowfin in that park. I wish we had more lakes that were all catch and release. That would make bass fishing WAY better.

I won't fish lakes that are strict catch and release lakes, unless I have know choice.

I know guys that spend there whole day fishing and throwing everything they have and if you ask them they'll say to you oh yeah today was a good day I caught 3~4 Bass today, how long I'll say 10 hrs :WHOA:. If I fished 10 hrs and only caught 4 fish I'd give up fishing. Remember some pages back I posted a pic of a little Black Crappie that was taken in PP overlooking the back area of the lake. I normally go to the park to practice with a new lure I never go there with the idea of catching fish anymore at least in the last 6 yrs.

And my personal best Bass is 12". Hey, I'm a saltwater guy ;)

People Please note that this news clipping is from 2006, I have live within shouting distant of the Park most of my life, and I've been fishing there for the last 20 yrs. And at least 6 of the listed fish on the NY Times list aren't there now or in the past 20 yrs, period! I would love to believe they are but - I think not and know not.
