Palmer aquatics from YouTube said a Flowerhorn could be in a 50 gallon tank. Do you think this is a proper tank size

Not ideal, that’s for sure, you could get away with it but I would not keep one in anything under a 4’ 75

I kept my breeding pair in a 60g tall. It didn't provide much exploring room but it did give them allot more wiggle room since it was much deeper and taller then a regular 60g. Granted I would say this setup was better suited to a single FH. 2 in there made it almost weekly water changes just to keep up with the bioload once they were near fully grown adults.

I think 50 gal would be fine for a female.

I kept a breeding pair of Trimacs in a 4x2x2 120 Gal. Prior to getting the Trimacs I thought 2 fish in a tank that size was a waste. Once I had an adult pair in there I thought it was a wonderful use of that tank.

That female would have been fine in a standard 55 Gal. Maybe even a 40 Breeder (36" x 18" @ 16"). But there is no way the male would have been happy nor even healthy in a 55 Gal.

50g is considered the minimum for Fh in many countries over in Asia(36*18*18),you could pull it off but your going to need to be doing more water changes and over filter your tank to keep it pristine.Besides the average Zz Rd won't get to 12".Imho palmer aquatics isn't the best source of information, he doesn't speak of his first hand experience it's usually the outcome of a few minutes of research on facebook or google.

I personally think a 75 minimum for a Flowerhorn just because the extra width a 75 gallon tank has.
