Food For An Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed Cichlid Excel by Hikari. compare it to gold/staple. any meaty frozen food is great as well, and I also buy them smelt from the grocery store when it's on sale. chop it up abit and they love it. I also throw them Nightcrawlers, and the occasional Rosy minnows to keep them active. quarantined ect first ;) I have recently switched to NLS from HIkari but still feed both to counter the $ of the NLS. I fed them ALOT when they where juvies, and it was rough keeping their bellies rounded out 2-3+ times a day. I wouldn't consider it power feeding, sunken bellies indicate lack of nourishment imo.

My best advise is to offer as wide a range of foods as you can. and high protein foods. look for deals on fish in the meat dept of your local grocer ect. You can save alot of money this way. I try to balance out 50-75% pellets and the rest frozen/meaty foods. peas are great for their digestive tracts and my guys do enjoy them now and then as well. Avoid mammal based protein if you can, but the occasional beefheart hasn't harmed my guys at all.

Sounds like I have all of the advice I asked for guys. Except a good review on the ken's pellets. I am satisfied thanks!

Never thought of feeding them dog food or cat food. I will probably pass on that one. But the other options seem like a great varied diet. I will definitely try to feed a major variety.

I feed hikari and home made fish food

Frozen tilapia is cheap from the grocery store, and then just blend in garlic, multi vitamin, some veggies. For consistency make it into a jelowtien and freeze what is not being used. This is the healthiest option out there since you know what is going into the food and economical.

For recipies just google home made fish food.

I will be getting my 3 inch oscar in a few days here. I am wondering what to feed him once he gets about a year old.

.................................................Would it be worth it?

Just looking for advice! Thanks!

In addition to the Hikari color enhancing pelets, add Asian store bought fresh sea food.....Remember white (fish)meat over red meat....Go for Tilapia peices, cocktail shrimp, frozen prawns, "29-35" shrimp, frozen krill...........
