Oh come on you should know two or three weeks experience means it is all good... I kept some Fathead minnows with a gar for a few weeks and it worked great too. No gar aggression at all.. Not sure why they all disappeared though as they where getting along so well. must be the filter.
LOL

This is hit or miss and never definable or definite.. There are as many good occasions with gar and Aro as there are bad. In general if you really like GAR screw the Aro... If your not really interested in GAR than keep your damn aro and forget the Gar...

There is no "one situation fits all rule" and to say there is one is ridiculously false. Different tanks with different dynamics exist. There are many factors that one needs to apply to a given situation and to generalize all as one is just stupid.

Finally..

judging by the size of the gar in your pic, i would guess the combo hasn't been operational for a very long time. for combos to really work you have to think in the order of years...that fish is a yearling at best--

Those fish are hardly 6 months old...

i havent had that problem so i cant really comment on that. this thread is really going somewhere else. i just wanted to let people know that aros do stay wid gars and nothing else more than that. im not a genius at fish keeping and most of the guys here know alot more than i can even think of. so for me watever you guys say is a learning curve

youre not wrong, aros can be kept with gars.
ive done it multiple times.
but its not always a good thing for the gar.
hopefully sol or alex will pitch in.

If it was my tank I would just have the silver aro, the silverdollars, and the others except the gars but I'll have to chance it when the aro gets big enough.

how long IS the point and you are completely incorrect with "knowing with in a day" if it will work or not. i could drop a 2" goldfish with a 2' arapaima and they would likely live together for a day or two before the goldfish got consumed. you could probably keep a small gar with a giant african lungfish for a day or two or even a week before the gar got bitten in half.--
