'Frankensalmon' ruled safe to eat: Fast-growing GM fish approved by scientists

These points are completely false. Salmon farming is unsustainable as a method of food production. The net result of salmon farming is a reduction in protein and will in no way end world hunger. It's the equivalent of growing corn to feed to cows to feed to jaguars to raise for food. Check out these links, they explain it better than I can:

Good read. My question though is since fish are growing larger in less time wouldn't it reduce the amount of feed that was needed? it basically helped eleviate the problem in your "corn to cow to jags to human consumption" scenario.

Animals cannot magically create calories. These horrid atrocities will need to eat more to grow at the rate they do.

I didn't say it would end it in itself. It will offset it so we don't farm as much. We cannot continue to farm the oceans the way we are. I maintain humans are a plague to this planet.

Where do you think the tons of fish that they grind into food for the salmon come from? Much of it could have been consumed by humans directly, and it reduces the available food for the other fish in the natural environment.

true north salmon is a more eco friendly company, that my company works with. they feed the salmon only plant based proteins (whats the point of farming one type of fish while depleting another (sardines)) and stock them at a much lower capacity then normal for a fish farm

Not when we're talking about slower metabolism

it's not just fish in their feed, it's a lot of plant and animal parts that people won't/can't eat like left over bits from animal processing or mash from breweries. they turn waste into something useful. plus you won't get a nice fillet from a sardine or millet!

I think some people on here need to study up on human digestion, genetic modification techniques and overall scientific knowledge.

Consuming this salmon puts you at no more risk for disease than eating your genetically modified beef hamburger. Yes thats right. The cows we farm have been bred for generations to grow faster and leaner. Pigs, chickens, corn, dairy cows, etc are all bred for desirable qualities.

Nearly every single piece of food you put in your mouth, organic or otherwise, has been genetically modified by humans for increased yield, nutrition, pest resistance, drought tolerance, etc. Whether humans do it with directed mutations or selective breeding the outcome is the same, genetically modified food. We have been doing it since the first prehistoric man started farming.

And for those that believe GM foods increase your disease risk, please explain to me how these foods would accomplish such a feat. Unless these fish are bred to produce mutagens(which would cause problems for themselves) I see absolutely no way these fish can cause any harm when consumed.

I am sceptic about these foods taste rather than the "health" risk....

As Said IN NO WAY shape or form can a GM product cause the person ingesting it to gain a disease I've down Bioengineering before and you have to physically break the nucleus walls and modify the genetic code and even then only some of the test subjects will give you good results....Now unless a virus spontaneously appears in the salmon with the salmon genes and inserts them into your cells....You cannot be harmed by eating GM food....

You cant get a diesease from non-pathogenic/chemical stuff....It's like saying I can get Down Syndrome from someone with Down Syndrome

If you guys dont like this so much eat wild salmon. Much better tasting than that farmraised crap they sell at the markets.
