I don't feed often because in their natural enviornment very few predators are successful enough to eat daily. Combine that with the limited tank space they have to burn calories in vs a lake...I find the fish ae more active and healthier when leaner. I know a "jumbo" or"obese" fish is super impressive but I've been trying this feeding strategy with these two since they were 4" and the results have been good.
 
I got these guys back in January at around 4"...the male is closing in on 10" so that's an average of 3/4 inches per month.

I think they'd be larger if they weren't breeding. When there are eggs in the tank they'll ignore food for 5-6 days.

That's actually a pretty decent growth rate. How often did you perform water changes?
 
50% water changes weekly, Filtered by a monster eheim Pro3 canister and a big Classic eheim canister (they get cleaned every 6 months). After every other water change I polish the water with either a diatom filter or a magnum HOB filter....depending on how lazy I'm feeling.
