mines been running since jan 1 never opened it up yet still strong water flow clear water

Heres my question thou, even though the water flow is good, wouldnt it still be better to change and clean out the filter anyways?

i would still clean it maybe every 3 months? or 4 months. depends on the load.

I am impressed... since Jan 1 until now... 5 months! i can't imagine how powerful that is if i combine it with my existing wet/dry system. i might end up cleaning it every year!:) the only thing i hate about canister are the manufacturer who beef up the price on medias for their canister. they should do a cheaper price for them. but if it's one a year i would go for it!!!:) need to make some room for my filter since the wet/dry just filled up the entire bottom part of my 7x2x2 tank.:)

i was thinking the same thing....his bioload is actually pretty big

Impressive considering the bioload - if the FX5 is indeed your only means of filtration. Is it?

Do you measure nitrite and ammonia? What are your levels right before your water change? Do you perform water changes thru your filter pot (some mention a quick-disconnect valve for easier water changes). That would drain at least some of the poop out...

if i only knew fx5 was comming out i would have just used 2x fx5 on my 180 but i don't regret my wet/dry it's also overkill. i would love to add one fx5 to my system. maybe it would lessen my work load on changing water or changing filter pads.:) i'll see if i can just connect it to my new set up. it's pretty crowded under the tank already.:( just imagine the bioload it has to go to... and 5months of not cleaning it... wow.. what's the secret to that canister? disolving poops?
