FX5 one last try

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a 220 Gallon tank, 72x24x30.

The stand is 3 feet high and the filter is below the tank. So it's about 5 feet below the top.

I swapped the propellar from the other FX5 that had no bubbles and still getting bubbles on the second FX5 so I agree there must be a leak somewhere.

Both inflow and outflow fittings are below water level in the tank. The connectors are as well. I lubed the gaskets both inflow and out flow.

There are only a few things that I can think of.

1. There must be a break in the tubes somewhere, but I don't have any water leaks.

2. I may have to cut my tubing so that there are no loops. As they are right now they are not looped but there is a U curve from filter up to tank.

3. Bad gaskets

I am going to swap the tubes on the FX5 that has no bubbles with the one that does tonight to see if there is a difference.

I'll keep you guys posted. Sux to have to deal with all this for a $200 plus filter. The worst part is the used FX5 I bought of a member on MFK works better than the brand new one.

Do you have your hoses backwards? The rubber ends on the hoses are supposed to be connected to the valves...

??

I'm not sure what you mean buy plumber's tape. From what I know, plumber's tape is a metal strip with holes in it wrapped around like regular tape. I've used it to hold things against the wall by putting a screw in one of the holes, strap the tape around what i'm going to hold in place and put another screw on the other side. I'm not sure if that's the plumber's tape you're talking about. If it is, I would like to know how you're using it. Or could you be talking about the teflon tape that you wrap around the thread of male side of a coupling and then screw the two couplings together. The also make teflon tape for gas pipes also. Don't know why you might be using either one but try taking them off and see what happens.

You are right, teflon tape, not plumbers tape. I have the rubber ends of the hoses on the valves to the canister.

I have changed gaskets and cut the tubes so they show in the pictures in the manual. I used electrical tape to seal all ends of valves and connections that are in the tank. I restarted it and still getting microbubbles.

Im going to wait again for 24 hrs to see if they clear.

mine does same thing. on an off, sometimes it is sometimes its not. its it a bad thing. i know its not normal but does it hurt anything

Just for the heck of it, make sure the canister is purged out, then close the intake valve while the pump is running and let it run for a few minutes to see if air builds in the canister.

I believe this will only happen if air is leaking from the lid, pump or intake side.

After a few minutes, unplug the canister and see if air comes out.

If I had the money I would buy the Fx5 off you to do a bunch of trouble shooting between my other Fx5.

I purchased three FX5s from ebay and all have performed flawlessly for several years. Upon setup, I placed a thin layer of potable silicone grease on all o-rings. These include the large o-ring between the lid and canister, the o-rings for the hose valves and the o-ring on the underside of the lid that slides over the intake pipe. For what it's worth.

I tried this and i can hear air inside the canister. I started to shake it and i can hear water swishing around in the canister. Is that normal for some air to be in there? If not how do i get it out?

I still have microbubbles.
