FX5 one last try

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I forgot you had the baskets out of the Fx5. When you don't have them in the Fx5, the canister can not purge completely. You will never get all the air out.

Replace the baskets w/o media and then check for air. You may want to force purge a couple times by unplugging it.

This sounds pretty frustrating. There has to be air coming in somewhere. You could try pressure testing the circuit. That might be difficult if you don't have the equipment. You could test each part of the unit seperately. Buy some Rubber hosing to replace the existing hoses, see if that makes a difference, if not then you know its not the hoses. When the unit is running try listening to the canister closely to see if you hear any hissing. When looking at something like this it's best to look at each part that could potentially fail and prove that it works. So if the hoses are good check your connections. Then that only leaves air somehow coming into the canister or coming from your tank, as someone ealier mentioned.

A few questions that I'm sure you've already covered.

Does the water level ever go below the output?

When starting is the canister at least 3/4 full?

Good Luck!

Try putting your hand over the return to create pressure and check the return hose for leaks if none switch the hoses and repeat. Sorry to hear all the bad luck Im on my third and love them. Best of luck on this.

I have closed the aquavalve on the outflow gasket with the inflow valve open. I assumed that if there were leaks, water would seep out since it has no release. I did not see a speck of water on the canister of on the inflow tubing, so I have ruled them out.

I am at the end of the line with this, I'm going to get 2 XP4's and sell the Fluval. Thanks everyone who provided there input.

Use a polishing pad (if you want to spend the money) or use the cut to size batting that is much cheaper. It will clear it up. I wouldn't panic, especially when you don't have media in the filter.

How much are you asking for the FX5?

just send it back and they will send you a new one.
it could be a defect.

I tried this and i can hear air inside the canister. I started to shake it and i can hear water swishing around in the canister. Is that normal for some air to be in there? If not how do i get it out?

I still have microbubbles.
it shoudl be purging itself of air every 24 hours i think. maybe the micro chip is messed up. there has to be a reason for it. i have an fx5 and i love it. i would suggest returning it before gettin a diff filter

Just to give you a heads up..... I personally like the xp series, but the output of the xp4 is pathetically low compared to the advertised rate. It's about 190 gph with media ( advertised 450 gph)

Two XP4s are a major downgrade compared to a single Fx5. Contact Hagen, see if you can get a replacement or buy a new Fx5. Buying used filters are not a good idea.

It seems there is a very small percentage of Fx5 owners with the problem you described.
