Sure and go ahead and kill the fish.... 5 to 6 inch longnosed should never be starved. Just keep offering it feeders along with whatever else you have around. (Market shrimp, strips of white fleshed fish, pellets etc.) When the fish is larger you can be a bit more aggressive in getting it on other foods but until then do make sure it is well fed and growing fast.

earthworms may work, but you would have to cut them up...gars are sometimes confused by worms since they have an odd shape for a small gar to take. i would suggest pieces of raw fish, or whole frozen silversides. you can make them 'move' for the gar by sticking them on the end of a piece of rigid acrylic tubing (or any other plastic stick)...this often works to entice the gars to strike--

1. Not feeding them for a day or two is NOT starving them, it is fasting them, and why bother doing either? it is not needed, advised or required. Small gar should not be "starved" they should be stuffed....always....

2. Your post merely says starve them it does not clarify the span of time that it is safe to fast them. Nor does it offer any useful detail aside from this..Starving them is not good advice nor is it the best way to keep a small gar alive...

When doing that try some thin slivers or fish and shrimp also. He might just take it right off especially after a worm piece or two.
