GATF loosing scales?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is a very good question. I don't like adding oil based meds to the tank because I feel it can impede the up take of oxygen by preventing the gills from working at optimum efficiency. They do have some bacteriostatic action but for moderate to serious infections they are similar us putting a spray disinfectant on a cut. They can be useful for minor scrapes etc. but IMO no more so than salt which helps improve gill function and reduce stress. I feel this is an important aspect in the treatment of sick or injured fish. They do smell nice.

I would stay with salt 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water and clean water. Do daily water changes and replace salt removed by % of water changes. Try this for a few days but if you see it take a turn for the worse or there is any change post so we can advise further please post Ph so the correct med can be recomended if needed.

Edit: I am not a fan of any oil based meds such as mela/pimafix.

That's the dose I am using, ok I will do daily WC of 25%? Ok thanks, the ph is 7.2

You can try just water changes and salt baths. it sounds like the little guy has a lot going on poor thing. I've had alot of luck with maracyn plus and salt baths I start treating as soon as I see something is wrong. The salt baths seem to work wonders

Yea he wasn't in very good condition but I've been looking for 1 for a long time and I was sure I could heal him up but yea he is/was very skinny, large abrasion where the white scales are and most of the top part of his tail fin is missing. I'm still confident I can grow him into a beast tho :)

Oh thanks for the info :) sounds like salt baths are much better. If salt isn't working for treatment of a bacterial infection what would you use?

that's awesome of you for saving him :) I hope he gets better fast. He's so cute

Marycin 2 would still be effective for both systemic & non systemic issues at 7.2 or use Furan 2 for non systemic issues if was baterial. This is perhaps more of a fungal issue which you have to be carful treating most OTC fungus meds contain Malachite green which is more toxic at lower Ph levels and some MG senative fish, 7.2 is ok but for this fish buffering Malachite green with Triple sulf would be recommended due to the sensativity to the MG. OP stick with the cean salted water for now and monitor the fish closely.

Edit: Should you need to treat for fungus get some Methylene blue (not malachite green) and if this does not resolve with the salt I will tell you how to use the MB in a bath.

Hope you can save him! I side with the salt, and frequent, small water changes as well.

If he still eats, that's 3/4 the battle won.

Ok thanks, it seems to be going down slightly already so I will post in a day or 2 and let you know how things are going.
