Gender My Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on what a butterfly cichlid is, pics would help. As I had mentioned there are a few with that name.
The main risk with a jewel is the similar markings and shape may cause issues, though I’ve never personally tried that mix (with a healthy jewel).

Tbh if you want a tank mate I’d go with what Deadeye Deadeye said and probably get a school of small-medium sized dither fish or if you want another cichlid tank mate, get a Convict. They’re pretty active, small so they won’t take eyes away from the Dempsey and can more than hold their own against one.

Gotcha
Those butterfly cichlids are more on the peaceful end and probably would be unable to handle a jd.
Well since I am upgrading the little one to a 75 gallon I plan to try a red shoulder severum with some dithers again but if the severum has issues and my Jack Dempsey wants to be alone there then I have a back up plan and tank for him or her ……. They don’t look for a fight and can hold their own so I will try with no guarantees!!! I am about to start a new thread watch for it about carbon or purigen and then the downside to carbon I’ve been researching a lot lately!!!

I have to agree after looking into the species it’s not even being considered anymore I am looking at a red shoulder severum and the Starry might see which one doesn’t look for a fight but can handle itself basically but not to the point of killing my JD if I had to choose it would be my JD obviously in my situation. As you well know that I am deeply attached to this baby JD

Severums are extremely passive but can hold their own. My jd never paid mine any attention, I only had to move it because my leporinus was giving him a hard time.
Reds tend to be a bit meaner.
Blood parrot is also an option, mine gets along great with my jd, but they are also a mess of a fish so I’d only get one if you don’t dislike deformed hybrids.

Well yea I do dislike the deformed hybrid fish even flowerhorn those brain things on the head LOL ? I’m not here to hate on species I will stop!! But I will say I have heard the same from many about the severum to get him or her now….. trying to find a good price online I can’t get one here! Southern Illinois sucks like that!!!!! I have heard they do not start fights and can hold their own a bit! So I do plan on trying and bony JD literally doubled in size and is getting so much blue on the face and I believe that I successfully picked a female LOL ?!!!!!!

Pics?!
The biggest issue with sev is that they are from different water params in nature but compatibility can work. Really going to be individual based. Honestly convict or relatives is probably the safest option.
