Gender My Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So would the vent be larger???
male vent smaller if it does come to it I will take him/her and vent but I am going to put black sand 1st and see if that helps

It's been awhile since I check the vent of the JD, so

female oO

Male oo or o>

I would not put black sand. Tan sand is a better alternative and much easier to find at pool stores/home depot

You mean where the scales are missing?? A bit….. he / she was basically a rescue it was a unwanted JD and I am just doing my best and learning more as I go
I think by misshapen he means the heads a bit off. There is a prominent underbite on this guy.
This is my similarly sized male:

Ok great thanks so much…. This is my first JD and kind of a rescue he/she was left at my pet shop and it took 2 days for it to get comfortable and not in a stressful situation anymore but I have a feeling that this JD was just not loved and cared for IMO but he/she is loved now

The head and jaws are off is what I meant, it’s has nothing to do with you, it could be hereditary or poor husbandry, I can say 100 % it is nothing you did and also with that it’s apparent that you caring for it it’s in a much better place…

Thank you very much for that this fish instantly had stolen my heart ❤️ I just wish I knew for sure male or female I will eventually
But I also have white sand so I am going to put in darker sand for her just because I think it’s going to be more dark right now I’m not even using the tank lights it scares my JD so I am turning on my large over head in the room providing with a dull light ….. I am still reading about the fish I feel like I can’t do enough research and working on a feeding schedule and what day we do the fasting which will probably be Sunday the day before I got him/her home!! ❤️❤️ My JD

Well what gets me is one side is different and doesn’t go to the jaw but the gills are clearly full of color would that mean female or would it be male with what you just stated hereditary trait or poor husbandry
Or the previous owner was not caring for the fish very well and scales were damaged and they gave her away as soon as the worst damage was gone???? I don’t know ?‍♀️ you don’t have to reply just a idea maybe it’s a girl maybe it’s a boy either way I will know someday ?‍♀️?‍♀️

I think it’s a male for sure.
A female’s gill will look almost like the whole thing is painted blue.
Jexnell Jexnell has some pics of a female he had.
My jd was also very skittish, he still is a bit - they just naturally are. Adding lots of floating cover as well as dither fish (like mollies, rainbowfish, giant danios, or large tetras) help to calm it down and think that everything is safe.

Ok I see what you are saying about the fish there’s 2 panda garra swimming around the JD hates them so much tries to eat them so I would be buying meals basically so I decided to keep it alone temporarily and add a 4in EBA it’s 2in now in the grow out tank and then I will try combining those 2
As for the male part I have to agree because I believe that the vent holes match the male

I would see more problems rise with the acara than with the Garra. Acara being a cichlid is much more of competition for the jd.
