Gender My Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would see more problems rise with the acara than with the Garra. Acara being a cichlid is much more of competition for the jd.
Ok I see that’s why the garra are fine…. Interesting ok well here’s a newer picture I got rid of the white sand and couldn’t finish because my water company and won’t have water until tomorrow I’m upset … anyway I am starting to see more male characteristics and then maybe when I get water I can do a water change and add new sand black substrate all the way I decided….

This thread is killing me - fish don't have gender!
LOL you know I only wanted to know to properly name him and yes they do but really it doesn’t matter….. not most important thing to know but with that said I definitely have a male who is healthy well fed he fast 1 day a week Wednesday now I never followed through and tomorrow I will buy fish food and some feeder fish!!!!! Btw the name is Professor X!!!!
I also got frozen whole shrimp to make for him and I can hopefully include some protein rich veggies or basically greens like spinach or peas….. I know that is a dumb reason but this fish was just abandoned at pet shop in a bucket and was extremely skittish not yet ready for tank lights but as of now we’re up to 4 hours a day!! But as for the name he just made such a impact on my heart I thought he needed a strong name or something idk ?‍♀️ I guess it’s kinda like naming your new puppy I guess LOL ? and was majestic just such a beautiful fish!!! I truly understand why the JD is such a popular fish although aggressive as all get out I’m afraid to get dither fish Thursday what if he eats them all so I am going to try 4 large pearl danios and 2 female sword tails there are 2 panda rufa
They have lasted about 1 week so far… so I will find out I guess

I wouldn’t do feeders, jds aren’t too piscivorous in nature, but will eat what they can catch. Best staple is good pellets, nls and hikari are popular brands.
Mine is with Buenos Aires tetras, Australian rainbowfish, and a giant danio. He may take occasional swipes (has slowed down now that he is bigger) but has never done any damage…the biggest threat to them is honestly the rainbowfish.
In nature jds are found with mollies and a Mexican tetra species, though the latter isn’t seen too commonly in the trade.

Ok then don’t read it I’m sorry you don’t think so one lays eggs that is a girl then boys fertilize the eggs so to me it’s a gender please be kind I just want to give him or her a name and I still don’t know what kind of gender yet and it’s something I would like to know especially since there’s a size difference but thank you for the rude comment! You could have ignored my thread thank you.

This is a male because the fish is getting really dark and has mainly colored up more in the face

100% a male
I always thought Rocky is a simple but good name for a jd. Scientific name is Rocio octofasciata so it kind of fits, and the name Jack Dempsey comes from the famous boxer.
For the deformed head something like Quasimodo comes to mind.
I named mine Sweetums after the muppets character:

Thank you so much ? when I changed my sand from white to black and my background, this fish seemed to completely change on me color, personality everything. So I was again stumped. So with this information I will have one last question ?‍♀️
What is the average final size of a common JD male????

I’ve heard of 14 inches, but even 12 is pretty big for one.
8-10 is pretty standard for a male, 6-8 for a female.
My male is currently 6-7 inches, a bit over 2 and a quarter years since I’ve had him.

Ok thanks I’ve heard 15 in whoa ? scared me because I’m trying to make just the one JD and a clown loach in a 55 gallon my boy just hit 7in I’ve had him a month and he was 6in so with that said I definitely have a growing male still I gave him a approx age of just over a year probably at the growth of 1/2in a month but I went ahead and added a few months just cause I don’t know ?‍♀️
It got so bad with not eating last week I called my pet shop owner asked if he knew anything about his diet age anything he said he was clueless since when he got to the door the guy was gone and there was bucket with water and this big guy!!! Who does that?
So mean ?
