ive got a 90USG tank and want to put a pair of some big gentle cichlids in there. i dont really want anything aggressive. big peaceful fish really. id like a male female pair of them but am not majorly fussed about them breeding, just would like to see the interaction, although a few babies would be nice :)

Thanks
Matt

Not to rain on you or anything but 90g isn't exactly big enough for gentle giants....IME not enough room for anything more than 10".....

For things on the gentle side, severums may be as big as you can go for a pair.

uaru A. interact well as a pair. very owner responsive and generally very peaceful. there is also uaru F. but they cost some serious coin and im unsure if they do ok in pairs, their looks make it worth looking into though.

lol sorry i meant kinda as big as the tank will hold kinda thing.

so severums and uaru good so far?

i assume chocolate cichlids would get too big?

keep them sugegstions comin'

Matt

yeah I think chocolate would work as well. you might even be able to do a pair of bocourti but they will get a little larger. i believe 12-14" is about max for them which would be pushing it for a 90 gallon but they'd still have enough room to turn around, just that they'd look a little more cramped than say the uaru, chocolate or severums.
:)

Keep in mind that you'd probably want to buy them as juveniles and raise them together -- if you try to take two larger cichlids and throw them into a tank together, they may not take to one another. Even male/female pairs don't always work out -- sometimes they turn on each other for whatever reason.

Severums are a good fit for that tank. Chocolate cichlids and Uaru have the potential to grow a bit larger than sevs, so you might be pushing it, but you could always upgrade them later if they were outgrowing it.

Look at the JDM keepers, with a tank that big you could keep a pair of almost all the Central Americans.

You would be their English hero. You could call it an EDM, the English version.

Make it a coldwater tank and "evolve" your cichlids to that enviroment. Better yet.

I recommend H. nicaraguensis. Very peaceful but will hold their own if they need to.
