do any of you guys know if any of these species are from columbia? I would like to do a columbia themed tank. Not a real dedicated biotope but i would like as many species as possible to be columbian.

Thanks
Matt

Most species mentioned in this thread have been South American. So possibly. Though fish of the Amazon or Orinoco can be said to be native to Colombia, Venezuela or Peru all at once...

wow thankyou for all the responses :)

i would like to keep chocolates with Geos and sevs but obviously they wouldnt be able to live in a 90!!

so would it be ok to keep them in a 90 while they are juvinilles and they as they grow transfer the chocolates and geo's into a 125 as they grow bigger? and then leave the severums in the 90 and add like some firemouths when the geos and chocolates have gone?

Thanks
Matt

so would a pair of chocolates and like 3 pairs of dwarf cichlids be ok in a 90? Until the chocs outgrow the tank?

I think either of those could work, or if you're thinking eventual upgrade you could do the first group and move everybody over to the big tank when they really start getting big.

Problem with the chocs + dwarfs idea is chocolates are kind of greedy and pushy, they might really intimidate/stress the dwarfs, or at least hog up all the food. If you want a comm with dwarfs I'd go with maybe keyholes or a pair of uaru, rather than chocolates.

oh rite, so i could pick near enough any south american cichlid and it would fit in with a columbian biotope? So chocolates are a little boisterous to allow the dwarf cichlids to be at their best? Severums/urau are better? I assume geo's would just crowd the bottom of the tank where the dwarfs would like to chill?

I don't think the chocs would be outright aggressive to the dwarfs, mine generally ignored much smaller fish but would chase fish that approached the same size. But just their size/bulk could really stress your little guys out. You might find that with severums too...I think the best choice might be the uaru.

And I agree, if you did a group of geo/satanoperca along with the dwarfs you'd see all the activity in the bottom half of the tank. My current setup features festivums, severums, and S. jurupari; my tank is 30" high and I have activity at all levels.

I would do a pair of Rocktiel Sev's and a big school of giant dianos and maybe one of the smaller Geo's

I recommend H. nicaraguensis. Very peaceful but will hold their own if they need to.

I must disagree with this. Male nics can be absolutely evil with fish their own size or smaller. I had one nearly kill a similarly sized oscar, as well as a female. That's not to say their all aggressive, but they are definitely not all peaceful...

What about Acarichthys heckeli? I think they are ocurring in colombia too. They get approx. 9 inch in size, will be peaceful and you can keep a small group together.

right so id like a m/f pair of severums hopefully breeding. What else could i keep in there with them? Id remove the eggs and hatch them if they did breed. Maybe a trio of geos? Or another pair of sevs? I will have a 125/180 coming soon.
