Geophagus have spawned

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not to hijack this thread, but are there any ways to get them to spawn? Im going to try the big water change and raising of the temp but is there something else I can do also to increase my chances of having them spawn?

P.S.

Did you ever find the fry?

no sign of the fry.

I plan to move them to a tank more suited to them (standard shape, with more swimming length, rather than the corner tank their in now)

fwiw. All I did was provide regular large water changes (50% a week) I turned the temp up, so that may have been a triggering factor) and their fed exclusively on NLS. I was treating with frozen bloodworm for a bit, but it was irregular, and I no longer have any so cant feed it to them

after years of breeding Geo's i don't think temp has anything to do with it but frequent water changes does and a good diet. even when i do 30% a week it was plenty to trigger a spawn. i also kept 10 (5 pairs) in a 240gal and they were always spawning. when they are ready to spawn and learn to guard there fry they will, just give them time, don't force it. :D

Is NLS New Life Spectrum? If so what kind? Mine just ate for the first time. Shrimp pellets. I did a 70% water change and lowered the temp. No sings of breeding...

70% is excessive. it will cause a stress spawn if anything. not the kind of spawns i would want. way more then you need to. best bet with any species is just keep the water pristine and not worry about the size of water changes and the temp. but that you just keep up on decent water changes around 30% is more then enough. leave the temp alone, Rio Tapajos doesn't change much, temp wise so almost pointless to try and induce a spawn by the temp,

and yes NLS is new life, i use the tiny pellets. but feed Hikari blood worms mostly

just keep your water clean and your fish fed and they WILL spawn. just give them time. :)

I somewhat disagree Joe. My two pairs are kept in a 90gal, which is in a home that doesn't have A/C. Every summer, when the tank temp goes near 85F, both pair will ALWAYS spawn.
