The Rio Tocantins is a tributary/river which runs through Brazil, hence the name. Same fish mate, quit pretending they aren't.

UUUUMMMMM, Hence Rio!!!!

The only Altifrons I haven't had the privilige of owning is from the Rio Negro. All others are rather bland in my opinion. I would compare the Negros(AKA Stripetail) to my Redheads!

Name got changed from orange to red head because red colors sale faster, and under certain light conditions mature dominate males can get such intense coloration that it could be construed as red.

I've only got juveniles, three Geophagus sp. 'Araguaia Orange Head', a slightly different species (in location and shape) to the Tapajos. Still showing very little orange in the head however, which is dissappointing me, but I need to give them time.

When did Orange Heads magically get renamed to Red Heads? :p

I've got a single Altifrons 'Rio Tocantins' and I prefer him to my Araguaia Orange Heads personally, very vividly coloured as he's the dominant Eartheater in the tank.

Ha, won't you ask Nick from NE Cichlids and everyone else that sells them. :grinno:

I just started calling them redheads because people were asking if they were two different fish. Call them what you want, I know what they are.;)

I have had the best coloration from Hikari Cichlid Gold(sinking type). It comes in a blue package. Of course Krill and plankton helps too. Just experiment and see what they like the most and their colors will really SHOW!

Back from the dead.

I have 4 of the orange heads from the same batch as the OP. At what size do they begin to color up (the forehead in particular)? They are pretty slow growers, but I too have 4 ~4" geos that have me second guessing their species. IMO, they look much more like the sp. areos. They coloration of the fins is there, but the bodies more yellow.

I've also been unable to sex them at this point. There aren't any noticeable fin extensions, and all of the body types/shapes appear similar. Recently they've become much more territorial and liplock with eachother quite often, but I don't think a pair is forming.

p.s. I'll take some pics when I get home later tonight.
