I've visited this website many times before; it's great to see that people were able to defend themselves/prevent crime.

Sgt. Dennis Tueller of Salt Lake City Police Department conducted experiments which let to the conclusion that an attacker with a knife in his hand covers 21 feet in 1.5 seconds. Therefore anything under 21 feet is considered to be in the zone of "imminent danger of death or great bodily harm." In other words a person with a knife or any edged weapon is a direct and imminent threat to you if that person is within 21 feet (7 yards). Research shows that a person with a knife who is closer than 7 yards can stab or cut you before you can stop them with a gun. Most police officers, even with the gun already in hand, cannot hit a target twice before the "assailant" can cover 10 yards.

Ive seen this research before, and in my opinion it alone doesnt really prove much. People often quote it to claim knives are better weapons than guns or that guns will not be effective. It doesnt really take into count that the police officer is not going to just be standing there like he is at the range. If his weapon is already out, hes going to drop the rushing knife wielding bad guy. The cop is always at an initial disadvantage because he has to react to the situation. But once the dirt bag is upclose, knife fighting is not as easy as hollywood makes it seem and the cop will contact fire and the dirt bag loses.

With all this talk about killing people, I just want to stress again - Is there anything in your house worth a human life? Its easy to talk about it and say youd kill. and in alot of cases it is easy. But we as a society should not take the killing of another human being so lightly. yes if someone broke into my house and took my 65" TV Id feel like I wanted to kill him. but its really not worth it. Controlling that impulse and making a rational decision is what separates us from the beasts of the wild. Dont get me wrong, I firmly believe theres a time for killing, but there is more often a time for restraint. I have many guns. and i tell my wife that if someone breaks in while im gone, to call 911 and get out of the house. I dont want her in a gun fight and i dont want her to have to live with killing someone.
trust me, unless youre a total sociopath, when youre standing over the body of your intruder watching him bleed out onto your carpet, you are not going to feel good. You wont be high-fiving your roommate while the intruder gurgles and wheezes on the floor. Regardless of if the shooting is justified, what you will have done is take a child away from a mother. take a husband away from a wife? brothers from sisters? This quanta of grief will be by your hand and you will have to decide if you made the world a better place by visiting so much misery upon people you never knew, who did nothing against you, over some meager possessions in your house.
Youve got to live with every life you take.

My original point still stands though: at this point in time, a security system would be much more beneficial than a firearm. The odds of getting robbed while at home are much slimmer than getting robbed while away from home (just like before). While having a firearm might help if you're robbed/home invaded while you're at home, it's not going to help at all for when you're not at home. Get yourself a good security system in place, then start doing research on getting a firearm.

Also here's a bit of food for thought:

The 21 foot rule is not God spoken word. Each Officer has different reaction times. I can draw with gloves on and get shots off with effect on target in about a half a second. It been about a year since I was timed. No gloves and I am even faster. This is out of a level three holster. If I already have my gun out and the bad guy or gal comes straight on which will most likely happened due to the need to close the distance to be effective with the knife he or she is DRT. I can get off atleast 5 shots in a second an half. Also in a knife fight I expect to get cut. BUT I WILL WIN. Skill and mindset can overcome almost anything.

This thread is getting off topic. The OP needs to decide if he can and is willing to take a life. If he thinks he can he needs to go rent a few firearms to determine what best works for him. While he is figuring out the best firearm and set for himself he needs to take some basic and the advanced firearms classes. What we may like and feel comfortable shooting may not suit the OP and vise versa. So suggesting guns and calibers is mute point. Pointing a firearm at someone is not done to scare or maim. It's done because you are trying to end something or someones life. If you think you are incapable of doing that leave it to the pro's and go lock your self in a room (if the situation dictates) or carry Law Enforcement grade OC spray and become a good runner. I hate to sound harsh but these are things you should be considering if you are planning to employ a firearm in any capacity other than recreational shooting.

Absolutely, but would you rather get your family out the house and let the cops handle it, or would you like your children to watch you kill a man?
Youre probably not going to get a "wow daddy that was cool" reaction.

its all in the scenario then. yours seem to be escapable. as in you are out and about to call the cops when you notice your door is open.

what if they are already in your house while you are sleeping. they have full control now.

fast forward abit, i fought the dude. the results came in my favor but could have gone better.

it just depends on what your thinking..

Even if it means sneaking out the window in your underwear , escape is the course of action ive given my family if a burglar breaks in. If Im there I might stay in the house but for them, I preach avoidance/escape. As for myself, I probably wouldnt move to contact on an intruder. Just not good risk management. I'll wait in place for him to come to me. that lends me the tactical advantage.

your tactical advantage wasnt there to start with. as they blind sighted you sleeping
