Maybe yous should consider investing in a security system before purchasing a firearm? A well-placed security camera or two plus an alarm could really help to identify intruders (provided that their faces aren't obscured). Besides, you can't defend your residence with a firearm when you're not there to use it and it's locked inside (and you certainly can't legally carry a shotgun in public).

For example, someone(s) jacked the AC unit from my dad's warehouse while we were on vacation over this past Thanksgiving Break, so we're going to go the remote security camera route and such instead of the firearm route. Both of us own firearms and know how to use them, but we never intend to use the in a defensive manner even though some of them would work very well.

Please at least consider getting a security system of some sort before purchasing a firearm; it will be much more effective for preventing/recording crime when you aren't at home to defend your residence.

So easy to talk about killing someone, and we all say these kinds of things when we are mad. You cant un-kill someone. You WILL carry it with you for the rest of your life. Im not saying dont buy a gun. I own several. Just dont be in such a hurry to shoot someone. I really doubt anything in your house is worth killing over.

Pretty sure you would change your mind pretty fast if someone was going to kill a member of your family.

I believe that in those circumstances, with family involved, most of us would.

A quite different thing is to avoid a robbery in progress.

Thing is, you only know you are able to when it happens.

Of course we all loudly declare that we would kill to protect our household, and most of us would try to, if it came to that.

But there is a big difference between willing to and being able to. Most of us would fumble with the gun, try to give the felon an opportunity to turn back and whatnot...and most probably get shot in the meantime.

An unexperienced gun user is worse off with a gun, when the ....hits the fan, than without .

And, the ones in the Police or Military excepted, there simply is no way that us lot of MFK members ( proficient hunters included ) are so well versed in this killing business.

That is, imho, a load of banter.

Well thats a shame. Come inside my house as an invader I am going to do my best to kill you.
I suport the Castle Doctrine/Law, and do not feel I should have a Duty to Retreat (unless my gun is behind me). Anyone with the guts and low morals to enter an occupied home needs put down IMHO.

Great reading here how people like you and I prevented crime with fire power and guts:

I've visited this website many times before; it's great to see that people were able to defend themselves/prevent crime.

My original point still stands though: at this point in time, a security system would be much more beneficial than a firearm. The odds of getting robbed while at home are much slimmer than getting robbed while away from home (just like before). While having a firearm might help if you're robbed/home invaded while you're at home, it's not going to help at all for when you're not at home. Get yourself a good security system in place, then start doing research on getting a firearm.

Also here's a bit of food for thought:

Sgt. Dennis Tueller of Salt Lake City Police Department conducted experiments which let to the conclusion that an attacker with a knife in his hand covers 21 feet in 1.5 seconds. Therefore anything under 21 feet is considered to be in the zone of "imminent danger of death or great bodily harm." In other words a person with a knife or any edged weapon is a direct and imminent threat to you if that person is within 21 feet (7 yards). Research shows that a person with a knife who is closer than 7 yards can stab or cut you before you can stop them with a gun. Most police officers, even with the gun already in hand, cannot hit a target twice before the "assailant" can cover 10 yards.

hince my sharp short machete beside my bed :D

1-have i ever fought a gun wielding bad guy with my bare hands? yes

2-would i do it again to save my life and others i care about? yes

3-should people have guns for self defense? yes

just arm yourself with what ever. get a glock, get an ak, get a sword. get something. its obvious you dont ever want to be in my situation where i didnt have one. the horrors. worst year ever.

i was looking into it and the best bet would be a a good door. cant stress that. A GOOD STINKY DOOR. security system, a DOG, then a gun. combine those you wouldnt need to use your gun. less likely.

lol. i got swords, machetes, ak, pistols, everything for defence in my house. lol. all are close to my bed.
