i will look into the combination light since it has to fit properly over the aquariam.... the aquariam is located in the fish room that is always about 80 degrees and very warm in there due to to about 10 tanks ...3 being 125gal.. does that make any difference..?Vicious_Fish;2260986; said:A basking light can be a regular old light bulb as long as it puts out enough heat. A UVB bulb puts out well...UVB! They do make some reptile lights that cover both. The thing is you have a fluorescent bulb on your tank and they produce very little heat.
The only outdoor plans would be in summer... here the winters are brutal..coura;2261706; said:A normal 40w bulb is enough for babys as far basking goes. Place about 15cm distance from were they bask. And wach for water dropings. Maybe you should buy one of thouse new ligths that dont explode if the lamp is moist when the turts go in and out of the waterAlso dont you have outdoor plans for this guys
That would increase their life quality

is this what i need?Vicious_Fish;2262424; said:No, keeping them in there is fine. I'm sure it's quite humid in there too. One of the reasons they need a basking light is because in the wild they spend a good part of the day sunning themselves. Basking turtles need to be able to dry completely or they can develop skin fungus and are more susceptible to respiratory infections if a warm place to dry off is not provided.
i just have the strip light.. good idea with the driftwood... i notice that right now they put a foot on the floating plant and project themselves out of the water to rest.. later that will not hold them..lol thanks so much for all good info...appreciate it greatly... they seem to be getting the knack of swimming and know the whole dock and where to go to get up out of water..tommorrow i will leave them in all day and check on them but if they do good leave them...CTU2fan;2263009; said:I don't have my paints anymoreWhen I moved I gave them away
They are supposedly still doing well though. I had a female Southern Painted and a male & female Western, all adults. The turtles I have now get ZooMed pellets as a staple and they get freeze-dried krill just about every day as I feed it to my fish and I generally toss some to the turtles too. My painteds always ate everything though (cut fish, f/d krill, pellets, earthworms, no veggies) along with their pellets.
Not sure if you've got a full hood on your tank or just the strip light (I couldn't see in the pic) but if it's just the strip it's easy to work in a basking light. Just use a shop light from HD or Lowe's (the one with the clamp and the silver dome) and a 40-60 watt bulb. Clamp it on the tank rim and point it toward the turtle dock and you're all set.
As for worrying about the water depth I think they'll be just fine, but if you want put in some driftwood, or big rocks that are almost breaking the surface. That gives the turtles the option of resting in the water if they want...plus driftwood always looks good
Fish will be iffy. In the 30G you're probably not going to have much luck, but maybe in their permanent home. What have you got planned? I think Seth's combo of fish and natives has a good chance of working; you might also have luck with a big pleco.
