Sport fishing regs are different than collection for live use regs. Fish are considered a natural resource, and need a permit to harvest and keep them alive for other uses.
Actually, in last years regulations they added clarification that as long as the fish are transported within the daily bag limits and possession limits, that only a recreational license is required. This year they refined the wording for both the marine and freshwater regs.

However, there are restrictions/prohibitions for the live transport of certain species. And the possession limits also change by region.

...FWC does not give a rats ass about freshwater.

Unfortunately that is true. The officer that I ran into last year was only concerned about Black Bass (large mouths). He didn't care that I didn't have my license with me (it was valid and he checked). He didn't care that I didn't have the right kind of life preserver or sounding device. He didn't care that I was transporting water weeds (they were legal but he didn't care to verify that). He didn't care that I had two types of cast nets (nitty gritty for that water way) (he told me that it was really ok to keep lesser native species that weren't published in the regs for cast netting). He didn't care about the bait violation. He pointed out the fine line but let it slide. (It is legal to use bluegills for bait and to use a cast net to catch your bait. What isn't published is that you can't use bluegills if you catch them with a cast net.) But he searched my boat high and low looking for Black Bass. He kept saying "Do you have any Black Bass in here? ...Do you have any Black Bass in here?"

He was very nice though. And very professional. On the other hand, I've heard numerous horror stories of people who have had encounters with FWC on saltwater. :(

Yep. I was born here and was only asked once.
Make that twice. I went fishing Sunday with a friend. We brought cast nets and there are still a lot of people that think cast nets in freshwater are illegal. It turns out, a bunch of folks called the police so they came out to see what was going on.

i feel that chompers, heres its legal to use up to 10 foot cast net in tidal waters. one of my favorite piers is just below the tidal line and many people get upset asking me in rude voices "how can that be legal?"

regardless, 90% of my nettings are returned to the water, the rest are bluegills or minnows that get used for bait. i never keep fish, so the nice 5lb bass and crappies i catch get thrown back.

Any link to this, I havent heard that but would love it to be true, every year I purchase a freshwater fish dealers license which allows you to transport most freshwater fish in florida legally, because prior I was informed (once when I got in trouble) that a fishing license is only for bag limits and the fish must be deceased for transportation. But I was also told my dealers license doubles as a fishing license and for 40 bucks I dont mind (as long as that is true but I havent been checked yet).

I just went today, saw tons of pbass in the tamiami canal, really hard to catch though (I hear you need live) I saw about 100 throughout the day but only caught 4, If you drive down to the west end of SW 7th Terrace (which is across the canal of Sw 8th st) theres a little walkway park where you can park your car and fish along that section of the canal. Theres also a plaza near there (i believe still the tamiami canal) with a cicis wendys and winn dixie where I saw some other pbass and also caught a largemouth, saw two snook while fishing too but couldnt catch them.
