Going to get red tail barracuda

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
payara and cuda go together very well as long as they are simular in size.

But oscars are never a good tank mate. A 2" oscar can eat a 3" cuda no problem. so becareful.

Well the cuda is I think 3.5 iches. Plus my tiger oscar is not agressive whatsoever.

I am a huge fan of all of these fish. And i own all of them. They are wicked cool to have and watch eat.

i have a redtail cuda (Ace Falc) and two siver gars and a payara (shomb) and i have them in a custom 75 gallon long tank. This means my tank is shallow and 5 feet long not 4 feet long.

In a year or so i will certainly have to put these guys in a bigger tank say maybe a 125 or so.

A 55 gallon is way to small for an Ace Cuda especially a yellow tail that gets 12 inches to 15 inches long. Redtails only get about 10 inches usually but some get way bigger for reason dude. i saw one online that was llike 12+ inches long and he was big and mean. Silver gars of hujetas are fine under these conditions and actually the payara (schomb only!!!! No other kind of payara because they get huge!!) is cool in the 75 gallon long that is 5 feet long and maybe even a 75 gallon short too.

Trust me your cuda will have a broken nose in 6 months guaranteed. And that oscar is going to outgrow him double speed at gobble him him very fast too so be careful with that small tank set up they are in together now.

If you do not have a schomb payara which is a sabertooth cuda as some call them, your payara will out grow that tank so fast. Schombs only get about 12 inches if your lucky before they die of sudden death as some people call it. They say that after a year thye just die. One day you will wake up and hes floating. Mine is about 7 inches long, he is about a year and a half old at least, and he is bad ass. They also dont need any running room because they usually lurk around until something they can eat comes by. All payara species also need a good amount of moving water to keep their energy levels up and keep their metabolism running at a good pace. The faster the moving water the faster they will grow and the more they will eat.

Another thing about all of those fish is number one WATER QUALITY!!! Check your water perams as often as possible. i do water changes once a week. Do not introduce them to any amount of amonia and keep your feeder fish in a seperate and clean quarantine environment. All of those fish ESPECIALLY THE PAYARA will get sick so fast and die within 3 days from something as simple as ich. I have lost a cuda within 48 hours to ich. Finrot is huge in cudas too. they are super sensative to it. I have very special procedures for introducing cudas to my tank.

My suggestion at this point is enjoy them while you can and convince yourself to set up a bigger tank with tons of topwater room to run. Get a lot of crystal clear super clean water flow through your tank. The more live plants and oxygen the better. And get about 3 aces and a payara and 3 hujetas in a planted tank environment. You will have so much fun with your tank if you just keep the water clean its ridiculous. When people come over and watch my fish eat in my jungle forest of a planted tank they are amazed. Especially the payara and the ace.

Killdog I got ur pics message and the one you say you have are stripped when juvies. Mine lost there stripes at around 5". Those are Ace Falcirosis and get huge and have the fastest growth rates of all the cuda's. Mine went from 2" to 8" in 6months. And now at 1yr the last surviver is 10" and he was the runt.

I lost all the others from jumping out of the tank. So a tight fitting weighted lid is a must.

The others that I currently have are not stripped at all and 3-4" in length. They were imported all over the place this year. So I am thinking they are what you have. post a pic?

Pic 1 is the little guys Ace minimus. Max out at around 4-6" very slow growers.

Pic 2 -3-4 are the falcirosis and what they become. Very fast growers 1"per month up to 6-8". max around 14-16"

Becareful this one knocked the glass lid off and jumped out. *** seriously 7-8"

Mine looks more like the first pic but no stripes. And a little like the second pic. But I'm pretty sure it's the first pic. All the guy knew was that they were barracudas lol. He prob had no experience with owning them. He has them regularly but he has not much info.

if it looks like the first pic than you most likely have exactly what i have. Redtail Barracuda or Yellow Tail. Obviously the tail color will easily tell you what kind it is. Also, the redtail seams to be a little meatier fish and a little thicker. the yellow tails stay long and slenderish more. from what ive read, yellowtails get way bigger than the red tails at about 15 inches but it takes forever for them to get that big. really rare that they live that long in captivity to get that big but they do. my redtail grows at least a 1/2 inch per month. hes a monster.

here are some pics

If he looks like this fish, you will have tons of fun as long as you put him in a bigger tank. If he gets a bashed in face you wont like how skitish and crazed lunatic he gets when you come in the room. he will do exactly this: scoot fast to the other side of the tank, bash his face, get frustrated and then jump out of the tank onto the floor.

bottom fish: chucky the redtail cuda fish killing machine.
Top fish: Hujeta Gar

Maximus the Schomb Payara or "sabertooth cuda" for those that like that name

Chucky was about 4 inches in that pic 6 months ago. Now hes 8 inches still within the first year of ownership.

honestly dude, you are going to love this fish if he looks like this redtail Ace. they do get about 10 inches long though. but they are nuts eaters. chucky eats about 10 fish instantaneously in about 15 seconds every two days. maximus the payara, he is super boring but hes chill to have.

enjoy those fish man. they are super cool.

Terrible news guys, We had a power outage and the only tank that worked was my 55g. So I had to move my oscar and cuda out of my 10g and in to my 55g, So I leave the room and come back 5 minutes later and my hujeta gar has a fat stomach and there is no cuda to be found. This sucks really bad but I should have known a 8 inch territorial hujeta gar would probably eat a 3 inch cuda.
