Is this fin rot? I know its a little hard to see, but its like dark edges on the fin.

At this point I would say No.

Fin rot will show up as white fin edges that look frayed and damaged. As it progress's the fin will be consumed by the bacteria. When the bacteria gets to the body of the fish it dies.

I have seen fin rot progress to the point of killing a cuda in less than 12hrs. With no treatment. So being a bit paranoid with these characins is warranted.

I see. What can i do to prevent this? My crayfish has been messing up my balas, which i got the other day. So i think this will have a major effect on water quality. Also is it possible that the barracudas are scared of the balas? They are not eating, or is it a temporary thing? In a 75g will they still be like this? And finally is it better to have more than 2, like say 4 barracudas?

Sorry for all these questions, lol, but you give the best and most straightforward answers.

To get them to heal from injury's that have not become infected. I allways do 40-50% water changes every other day. I add salt as well some times and some times I do not. I add 1 table spoon full for every 5 gallons of tank size. And after a water change I add enough salt to make up for the new water changed.

If infection shows up I remove them to a hospital container and treat with antibiotics for 5-7 days min. I use maracyn and maracyn2 together. I change half the water every day in the container and add the meds for the water changed. Do not use antibiotics in the main tank. It will kill the bacteria that makes up your bio-filter (biological bacteria) the same as the bacteria that is harming your fish.

These water changes will help any water quality problems as well.

Not eating could be several things the worst being a parasite. If they have not been treated for parasites i would do that asap. These fish are wild caught and there for there is a ultra high likely hood that they came from the amazon with a parasite or 2. And then becuase we feed live foods there is a risk there as well, no matter how good of a quarintine proceedure we use.

I treat my feeders with each new batch for 2-3 days before feeding and my live eating tanks 2x yearly.

I use Jungle labs parasite clear tabs as per instructions on box. Some parasite meds may harm crayfish though. Mine allways use to shed/molt the day after I treaded. But they lived, until one ate a 3" cuda last year and then they were moved out. LOL

Another possibility for not eating could be the new tank mates. Cuda being a skittish fish by nature get stressed out anytime things change in there tank. Even a decore change can affect there feeding habits.

A 75g with your light stock level should be fine for a few of these cuda. If or when they make it to 12" or so you might think about an up grade. But you have a year or so before that happens. They do best in groups of 3+. Up to as many as your set up can handle.

Keep us updated and feel free to pm me if anything changes for the worse.

I fill straight from the tap. Tempature matched by feel. And I add my conditioner before filling.

The fins do not show signs of fin rot. They look like normal fraying from stress of some sort.

The water changes and salt will help that heal up no problem.

Just keep an eye on him for any change.

Why close it? Hybrid offered advice and it worked. Could be a good research tool for anyone who has these problems arise.
