Where Palm Trees Grow
Hey guys I just got a 55 gallon aquarium and I own a hydrolycus scomb and a senegal bichir and I'm wanting to get a red tail barracuda soon and I just wanted some info on it to make sure I can handle owning one.

Not sure what you are looking for?
  • But they grow to be 10" or so.
  • Grow fairly slowly.
  • Eat mostly live fish, but some have been able to train onto dead foods
  • By the time it reaches 6" will probably need a bigger tank than 55g's
  • a group of 3 could live in a 150g for life. As long as there is a good amount of decore. For them to hide in and around.
  • As juvies they have problems with fin and tail rot induced from stress.
  • The are a shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of 3 or more
  • Fairly skittish
  • Will atempt to eat any tank mate 1/2 there size or smaller.
Good tank mates would be
other cuda's
scombs
hujeta characins
Large tetra's
Basically anything that is not aggressive and to big to be eaten will work.

All Acestrorhynchus become way too big for your tank, escpecially if you're talking about falcirostris...

They grow slow but if you have a bigger tank in the works you will be fine. I have kept red tails and yellow tails and they do good with most stuff the can't eat. I even kept them with ATF and all the payara's. They were great till my arapaima ate them all.

Of the 16 documented species of Ace's there are a few that max out in the 4-6" range. So he could keep a small shoal of them in a 55g with no problems.

You would just have to know what you are buying. Red tail / yellow tail will not cut it.

I currently have a yellow tail that is 1.5 years old and 10". And in another tank i have 2 more yellow tails that are 10monold and 4". Both came from same retailer as yellow tail cuda.

All I know is the cuda is one of the smaller species he is very small right now I'm housing him in my 10g with a 2 inch oscar.
