It's funny you mention that. At the same petsmart that I mentioned, they do have max size of both oscar and pacu. The tank label on both read "can grow to be 10 inches". I'd laugh about it if it weren't so sad.:(

Mine says pacu will grow to 36" and the minimum tank size is 29 gallons.

There was a guy over at AC who used to own a fish store and had this (or similar) to say about finding employee's when giving the run down. I remember it being similar to this.

The people who are smart enough to care for the fish and be good employee's don't want to make $8.00/hr, at least not for long. The people who don't mind making $8.00/hr indefinately aren't very good employee's.

Can't pay more than that because overhead is low. DOA's have to be factored in plus other costs.

There are exceptions to that rule. Like people like Wurm who work it for fun/extra cash. But it holds true for the most part.

And honestly that's really what you get with any pet store. Once in a while you'll find a lfs worker who eat sleeps and breaths this stuff. But to most it's just a job and they don't get into the hobby that deep.

i hate pet smart, they have pangasius catfish labled at can grow to 8 inches, and one of them in the tank was at least 10 inches, they also had 12 in tinfoils that said they can grow to 8 inches, and their signs say plecos can grow to 12in. petsmart is like the walmart of LFS, they keep the same stock of every fish and they dont do special orders, petco at least gets special orders and doesnt treat fish like clothing on a rack. plus i found their staff much more knowledgeable. i also had a petsmart employee tell me that plecos will eat live fish, i laughed at him and called him a moron.

I am still new to the fish hobby and haven't yet dealt with Petco for fish yet. I have always preferred Petco over petsmart from back when i was in the snake business. Petco is more serious about their reptiles and offers more selection and education. I used to do a eduactional show at Petco every Sunday. petsmart didn't care anything about letting me (or anyone else) promote reptile education. I just stopped doing business with Petsmart for reptile stuff. Also, they didn't even sell feeder mice/rats. I live in a different area now and have no Petco nearby so I go to Petsmart for some of my tropical fish.

Anyway, to make a long story short. She finds a tub to put them in. I ask, "So I'm just curious, but what size tank do you have?" She replies (and I'm not BS-ing you) "I have an 85 gallon." :WHOA::WTF::jaw-dropp

You should have walked her to the guppy tank picked out the largest female and said... "This is NOT a 14" pacu ;)"

LOL. a 29 is 12"x24"!

well, I guess it could possibly fit in the 29 diagnally, nose in a bottom corner and tail in opposite top corner.

typical petsmart story, a lfs worker once tried to sell me a firemouth at the price of a flowerhorn simply because the tank he was in was labeled for flowerhorns, the kicker is the label had a picture of a flowerhorn and looks nothing like the firemouth I wanted to buy. the worker swore it was the same fish.

Well that's good to know. Since they only require a 29g they should be just fine in he 85
