Got rid of pacu and learned about a chain lfs

Petsmart labels the maximum size of fish incorrectly so people buy more fish. The bigger the fish gets, the less likely someone will buy it or have room for others. So they keep the max size small. For the 4 years I worked there I saw well over 20 species go through my departments mislabeled. Being a hobbiest and a fish lover I found it difficult being the aquatics manager. Most customers that came through didn't care about fish. Nor did the employees (kids in highscool that are only there because mommy and daddy made them)or other managers. Day after day I would refuse sales and get into arguments with stupid people. I'm so glad I'm out of there.

If you guys only knew.

yeah petco, petsmart= misinformed imployees..

At my pesmart I have this dumb kid working their who thinks he knows everything..I go in there to get fish food and feeders, and I hear him talking to some guy looking to get a fish, wel the first fish I would have pointed to for him would have been a guppy or molly. Well this idiot points to the oscars and says these are good first fish, they can live in tapwater and they only eat goldfish when small and when bigger 8-10" you feed them a rat!!!!???WOW, I say how big is your tank and the guy says pretty big..I am like what a 20 gallon? he says to me I have a 40 gallon and 4 oscars and a jd... I tell him I have two oscars and a 210 gallon tank and I need to upgrade.. then walk away
:)

i hate pet smart, they have pangasius catfish labled at can grow to 8 inches, and one of them in the tank was at least 10 inches, they also had 12 in tinfoils that said they can grow to 8 inches, and their signs say plecos can grow to 12in. petsmart is like the walmart of LFS, they keep the same stock of every fish and they dont do special orders, petco at least gets special orders and doesnt treat fish like clothing on a rack. plus i found their staff much more knowledgeable. i also had a petsmart employee tell me that plecos will eat live fish, i laughed at him and called him a moron.

Yeah, they need to update their tags. I can't refuse a sale of an Oscar to an ignorant person that wants one because it "eats fish" because he has a 30 gallon and that says a 30 gallon is the minimum size. Sadly, only some stores have good staff, others just hire people because they need more people.

This must be a requirment to get hired for that job. I argued for 20 min. with the local Petsmart about wether or not Green Terrors and plecos were compatible. Heres the kicker she was trying to tell me that a 4 inch pleco would eat a 3 inch GT!

Are you being serious if so lmao

since ive been fishkeeping (only 4 years) ive only found one knowledgeable employee in a petsmart or petco. most of them are sixteen year old girls who cant get a job anywhere else.

I'm really thinking if you "inherit" a pacu somehow the best option is euthanization. There are rarely every people that can take them, and if they can take them then chances are they are gunna be over their head with available pacus.

Giving an 85 gallon tank to a pacu is more or less torture and euthanasia is probably a better option.

I think pacu should not be sold to hobbyists. Just dont make them a pet fish anymore! I mean you dont see petsmart selling RTCs so why sell pacu. The advanced keeper could still get them.

My previous employeers company was bought out by PetSmart, and also all the workers contracts. So I worked for Petsmart for nearly a month before leaving. This is a company I won't support. They are ignorant conniving corporate suits intent on domination of the market, without greater concern for it.

I agree completely. I'd rather see new fishkeepers with a RBP then a red bellied pacu, and I'm sure most of their pacu sales are due to the fact that they look like piranha.

I'd rather RTC, TSN, Arows, pacu, channel cats, arapaima, gator gars ect be extremely hard for hobiest to get then have it like now. Be better to have the select few that can house them jump through hoops to get them then for 1000's of them to be doomed to a 29 gallon tank.

I've mentioned this before. Piranhas are illegal here. At many of the lfs I've seen pacu are promoted as "vegetarian piranha" a legal alternative to pirahna. Sad but somewhat ammusing considering paca aren't even vegetarian.
