Got rid of pacu and learned about a chain lfs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i agree that pacus shouldnt even be sold in lfs's to the common public--i just dont get it! these lfs's will do anything to make a buck at an animals expense.. its so sad.

:iagree:

I am still amazed that you are telling the story about you giving a fish to a person you knew could not care for them. They might be stupid for their mistake seeing that they run the fish department (which means she has management skills and applied for management job and got it. Not a fish person who applied for a job with fish that just happened to get a management position. To be a hobbiest and a good manager is not necessarily the same thing.) Then a fish keeper gave the fish to a person he knew could not care for them. I know we are not bashing people here, but come on... If you knew she could not care for them, why give them up... Lets not judge people with out looking at ourselves too...

I've mentioned this before. Piranhas are illegal here. At many of the lfs I've seen pacu are promoted as "vegetarian piranha" a legal alternative to pirahna. Sad but somewhat ammusing considering paca aren't even vegetarian.

Ive seen that as well

they should say "GIANT MOFO Vegetarian Piranha"

Today I saw a tank full of them at petsmart :screwy:

No one who is pet smart enough to care for a pacu buys fish at petsmart.

Petsmart should officially be an oxymoron

To put it quite simply, because in the end, they are just fish. What would you have me do? Maybe keep them and let them out grow the 120 they were in where they would be no better on than in an 85? Or maybe just toss them out? Or maybe grill them up? What would you have done? Went to the bank and borrowed a ton of money so that you can expand your home and build the 1000 gallon tank that they would require? well, not all of are perfect fish keepers like you apparently must be. You tell me whet you would have done since you are so much better.
I had a problem and now I don't. Maybe she will realize how foolish she is and do something with them. To be honest, I don't care. I take very good care of the ones I have, then if one dies, I flush it. That's right. FLUSH IT (the small ones anyway, never had a big one die as of yet). I don't cry, I don't mourn, I don't have a funeral and a burial. Just plop then swish, away it goes.
To answer your other question, I never said I was better than her, but what gives me the right to tell my story about how dumb she was is that I did my research. i read up and found out that i couldn't keep those pacu. i didn't go out and buy them or intentionally pick them out for my tank. Further more, I don't have a job as a fish store manager and stand around giving people bad advise on problems I am clueless on myself.

Besides, she told me she had a "huge" tank. Being the manager of the fish dept. I assumed she knew about them considering they sell them. I had no idea that her idea of huge was 85g until I got there with the fish.

Hope that cleared it up for you. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

The wildest thing they sell at a Maine petsmart are black ghost knives. Pacu's and other such fish can apparently survive Maine winters and will reproduce.

Sure I will tell you, but if you want to get pushy and be a tool about the matter. I will spell it out for you. You calling this person dumb for what they did is a like the pot calling the kettle black. I was trying to be polite and tell you that talking trash about a person for the mistake they made while making a great one yourself was rude, but hey you just told everyone how rude you were by getting all attitude for what seems to set you off when people point out what mistakes you make.

I would have brought them to my local LFS for free. He would feed them a good quality food for a few weeks and then he would grill them up. I am not a big fan of the texture of fish. So would bring a steak or brots. He does this with all of the Pacu that come in. What the difference is he would have killed rather than torturing them. Hey what do I know, in your mind I am some furu furu tree hugger, who thinks his poop smells like roses. Or I am just a guy who see that it is funny when I person criticizes people for something when he could have done something about it.

So lose the chip, and by the way welcome to the fish hobby.
