A bigger tank is better but if you only have a 55 that will work. So, yes you can keep one GT in a 55 gallon tank but limited to how you decorate the tank, so no big rocks as your center piece or big pieces of drift wood. Your aquarium will need to be as open as possible. The most important is water quality. You must do weekly water changes and have a good filtration system. Most local pet store GT s max out a 9 inches.

heres a few pics to get you an idea of how big gt's get....
they should not be house in 55 atleast not males.. remember these pics are not mine... most of thes are 10-13'' gt's

Honestly though how many people here have GT s over 9 inches in there tank?
quite a few if given the tank size, water changes, good diet they should reach atleast 10'' in 2 years easily.... the one in my avatar was purchased last january at 2'' and is now pushing 7.5'' even if hes not good looking or has good genes he was purchased at my lfs and he seems to still be growing..

More then u might thank. my first gt was well over 9 inches. He outgrew the 55 within a year. so to the op, i would not recomend a gt unless you are going to be able to upgrade. IMO a 55 is to small for life for a gt. However a 55 is a good grow out tank for a gt

He mentioned he would not be upgrading..... it seems everyone tells him its ok to keep gt's in a 55 and that they only max out at 8'' and females 6''..... totally not true...

I have a 75 US gallon (290litre) tank with a pair of GTs M is 4" and F is 3.5" there is also a full grown pair og convicts in the tank which are dominant to the GTs. wil I need to rehouse either pair as the GTs grow. There are a lot of hiding places and filtration is via 2 1000lph externals.

a pair of gt's will wasily own that 75 eventually killing the convicts.... wont be long before gt's get out of hand i would rehome the conivicts before it gets too nasty......

I wouldn't put a GT in a 55 unless it ends up being a grow out tank. Have thought about maybe getting an ebjd, they are perfect for 55s plus they are beautiful fish if properly taken care of.

i agree they are also less agressive and tend to stay smaller.... they also grow really slow and tend to die at young ages if you buy one makes sure its over 3''
