Amv I have kept dats successfully with a zero death rate so far. This is what you must remember to maintain if you want them to live. I always noticed, that a good amount of salt, or as suggested earlier, crushed coral with make the water's salinity higher in which would be a more suitable condition for the dats. The next step is to make sure to have very good filtration, especially if they are small dats. Then feed them well but do not overfeed them or else there will be ammonia. Do not add anything that will make them stressed and be sure to put some hiding spots when introducing them into a tank to make sure that they can feel more secure and become less stressed. Also if you did not cycle your tank properly, that could be the reason why the dats could be dying as well. Since there is not much beneficial bacteria, the water will have the ability to become ammonia high very fast, especially if it is a small tank. If you take this advice into account, I am sure you will have better luck the next time around. I hope this was helpful.:)
I agree with most of above advice, exept salt. Personally,
I wouldn't use salt on regular basis, this is just my opinion. Ntt is FW, not brackish.
I've only ever used salt once to speed up recovery of injured dat.

A well cycled tank, strong filtration and airation are a
"MUST" have if your keeping dats.

do u suggest coral then? i actually forgot to mention there is some crushed coral in my substrate i added it when i set up the tank...if i add coral how much should i add? today my little survivor is looking strong. hes out swimming around with the other fish and is completely stable so should i change anything or just go with it?

I got 6 1-2" NTT's atm in a 10 gal (I was thinking of moving them when they get bigger....I got tank sizes for every size till 110). I bought them like 3 days ago.....I want them on pellets ASAP and a pet peeve of mine is to not feed live food.

Should I starve them? how long can they last?
Should I periodically drop 1 crushed massivore pellet in the tank per day?
Or should I transition them to pellet by feeding frozen foods like brineshrimp?

Tank setup is 1 flowerpot, 2 small slate stones, 1 piece of drift wood.
I add 1 tspn of salt per 10 gallons. Airstone + AC 20 atm.

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT STARVE THEM!!!!! NTT's are known to be stubborn fish and will starve themselves if they do not see anything that would fit their liking. I would say in order to train on pellets, give them what they want and then try pellets for the next two days and keep doing this step over again. I was blessed with buying tiny dats that are already on pellets. Thank god, or I would have a heartache right now trying to train them

So I shouldn't starve them.....I have no idea what they eat though....I heard baby guppies but I don't want the disease and I don't have a quarantine tank for them. I tried frozen brineshrimp but the NTT's seem to swim away when I feed them and they don't come back out for a while and they lose interest in the food.

How (like method/delivery) should I feed them?
What should I feed them?

i have 7 1-2" NTT right now in a 90g with 2 5-6" NTT's and 1 4" indo and 2 4" clown loachs, i feed my little ntts guppies everyday just about and i they have already grown. I have only had them for about 2 weeks. FEED THEM ALOT and they will grow fast.

Ok noob. Here is the deal. Feed them live brime shrimp and then switch to frozen brime, or live bloodworm/tubixworm and switch to frozen blood/tubix. Either way you get them off live food. If you want to get them on pellets, you will need tankmates that eat them so the dats will learn that pellets are food.

Lol thanks, now I just have to find a lfs that sells these live foods....

never had a fish that was so reliant on live foods before, all my aro's, gars accepted pellets and stuff even though they were on live foods....

now do you have any suggestions for tankmates in that small 10 gallon that would "compete" or "show" them that the pellets are food?
