Growth in the wild versus a glass cage!

How is keeping a shoal cruel-you do know that Odoes are more comfortable when kept in a group. 180 the last I heard was 2 feet wide Odoes only get a foot-Once again can someone (even a wild specimen) show me a pic of an odoe over 14 or even 12 inches!

DB Junkie-I am not trying to be mean but a lot of people argue just for the sake of arguing and not really know what they are talking about! I have never seen a post from you on the CK thread. All of a sudden you have these fish for the sake of this debate-Kind of odd if you ask me.

Same reason you don't keep more than one oscar in a 75. Dude, weak. Are fish just ornaments to you? Even if they only get 12 inches in an aquarium they're a small fish with a big personality.

List of factors that affect growth in tank off the top of my head:
Concentrations of anti-growth hormone
Frequency of temperature fluctuations
Average temp
Positive stress (Immune system, blood composition stability, etc.)
Negative stress on the same
Appetite
Diet
Genetics of the individual
Dissolved gases, wastes and neutral solids
Oxygen levels
Any and all combinations of these few factors.
Gosh, I can't stop coming up with factors! And these would vary by species and locales of collection for wild specimens! The science of providing the exact conditions for maximum growth would be a struggle to perfect, so let's just remember that any fish should get to a decent size with good, general care. Expect the maximum, and if your fish stays smaller, great.

DB Junkie-the 18-24 inches was stated by a moderator on the CK thread-I guess you know more than him!! BTW could you post a pic of your CK!!

Aight. I'm tired of this crap. Get over it man. Fish aren't kept properly. You sit and wonder why they don't grow as big as they should it's cause they are NOT being kept properly. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. May take a scientist to figure out cause but not reason.

I don't care how many "happy" Odoes "your friend" has. I don't care if a "mod" said CK only get to 2 feet. Key word here "TYPICAL". These "typical" sizes are what you get when you are a "typical" hobbyist. TLK has a pond with 3+ foot knives is he a rare case? YES. A rare case of taking care of his fish PROPERLY. NOT "typically"

I don't know more than anyone. I know what I have experienced. Is it so hard to believe that most hobbyists can't admit they fall short in proper care of thier fish, and instead resort to threads like this to justify to themselves why thier fish aren't growing properly???

I can admit that I may fall a little short on proper care of my fish. But when comparing to the masses my fish have it a LOT better then a lot of fish on this site that are kept by hobbyists that CAN justify improper care, cause "That fish only gets so big"

The world doesn't have to prove to you that a fish gets so big. Your job as a hobbyist is to care for them properly.... And IF done properly you can see for yourself how big they get without other people's pics.

The Odoe thing was fun. But enough is enough........ I allready have an Odoe past the foot mark. I have a Rhaphiodon that is possibly one of the biggest in captivity. Believe me or don't I could care less.

HOW big do Dats get? Pulchers to be exact?

You aren't gonna see too many people saying they get 2 foot. But guess what?

i dont think DB was ever saying HE HAD a CK...
and cichlaguapote is a mod...does it mean he knows more than anyone else here because of that?:screwy:
no offence cichlaguapote...

they are more comfortable in a shoal.
but a 180g is not big enough,IMO,for a shoal!

I am not a typical fish keeper-A 1032 gallon pond to me is not typical that is what I have my CK in and they never pass the 24 inch mark.
The statement made that CK get to 24 max in captivity was actually made by Benjamin.
Other point when talking about Oscars and Odoes is like apples and oranges two different things.
For one Oscars are not necessarily schooling fish and produce a lot of waste.
Odoes are more comfortable in groups and are not as messy or produce the same waste as an Oscar.

DB Junkie-you know your points would actually make sense if you didn't tell people they sucked at keeping fish. LOL!
I mean have you been to my house? Did you fly to El Paso and see my tanks?
Don't remember seeing you there so how can you know how I care for my fish?
I don't mind that people have a difference of opinion-but leave the insults somewhere else. BTW can you post us a pic of that Odoe?
