if you fill the tank with food, you will never see them. They will eat when they want too, not necessarily when your watching. I think that, even though you refuse to believe it, your lighting is the problem. If you only turn it on when you feed them, and you only feed them sparingly by your own admission, you are giving them no "cycle". They have no idea when this bright light is going to turn on again. Also, they are ambush predators, and catfish. They hide, thats what they do.

anyways, what do u guys think of my plan stated in Post #1. im open to suggestions/adaptations..

thanks
Just put the lights on a timer a while, im sure it will do wonders. It has to be better than what your current scheadule is. IMO fish need some regularity, or they get confused.

why not run the lights more ???

at first i was told not to, now im gonna try that.

Regularity is definitely key. I think gulpers are normally lazy, but what do you mean liven up? like live food for your gulper or just a different kind of fish to add to your tank? Breed them in a different tank, because he might eat them faster than they can reproduce, and also they tend to go for larger fish.

Man, I know what you are going through. My raphael cats don't come out until 1 in the morning, lights or not. Thinking of unloading a few of the older and bigger ones to free up bioload. If they would act as awesome as they look I'd be so happy and I knew that when I bought them. But now it's wearing on me and I'll probably always have a few, just not five.

Do what is best for you and the fish. The tank should entertain you and the fish should be happy. But happy nocturnal fish just aren't that entertaining so maybe we need to make some changes to our stocklist, eh? Anybody want a few big raphael catfish?
