H. armatus x3

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i hypothesize that the feeders act like dithers.

Yup crazy vid

Seems the key lies in their diet or water chemistry. Deff dosnt seem to be tank size from this vid

that makes me think that it is NOT food as goldfish aren't healthy!
But maybe they stuck the goldfish in for the video? Maybe not something they actually feed daily.

You still don't see armatus in with large rays very often!

Maybe goldfish arent their only source of food. From what I read you dont want just feed a thiaminase based food so you compensate with other types on non thiaminase foods.
Just a thought.
I have been feeding my golds heavily then feed to the armatus right afterwards that way they are receiving the undigested prepared foods in their guts. At least until I can figure out a different source of whole fish. I could go fishing and catch a load of bluegill and perch just freezing them whole for the winter months.
I've found quite a few setups on youtube with larger rays and armatus. My biggest concern is the armatus getting spooked at night by the rays, going to run moonlights at night to hopefully prevent this.

Well most of those ive talked to from asia do use fresh or frozen chopped freshwater fish in their fish diet also. But one thing ive gotten from them and from my lil brother in japan is that goldfish are a very well liked fish in asia. And they just take better care of the feeders than we do my brother has been to shops with cleaner feeder tanks than some of the regular tanks at some of my LFS. Asians spend thousands on goldfish and just have better breeders and sources to get them than most of us. Look at how big and fat the feeders are in those vids, and compare those to the feeders at your LFS. Also found it funny one guy said scombs are more expensive than armatus where he is. I talk to a lot of asian FK because they are really the only ones i know who keep monster gobys and ive been getting a lot of good info from these guys on payaras

Can you get some inside info on their water chemistry over there? Do they have a trick to the parameters they keep their armatus tanks at?

with my first armatus i fed whole smelt (lake smelt) too mostly. These were whole head and guts and all. he also ate whole anchovies.

I use a moon light now every night too.

4 week update:

They have grown about two inches now, except for the dark one. The dark one, at first, was the largest, now he is about the same size, if not smaller then the smallest from the beginning. He doesnt look skinny and I see his belly full from time to time, very strange the difference in his growth rate IMO.

He and the original smallest are extremely skittish still. The other isnt too bad but none were like the very first armatus I had a few years ago. That fish was a finger chaser nearly from the beginning.

Another thing I have noticed is that for the first couple of weeks their bellies were always stuffed, now not so much but they are still going through the feeders at about a dozen or so a day. I am thinking they are pacing themselves vs just gorging themselves all at once.

Look good. My trio was very skittish at first. But I feed every day but dont leave in feeders cause I want them to associate me with their food . So now they all three come to front when I walk in room To add feeders. All three attack the feeders as soon as I put them in. I also have two dark ones and one that is a bright golden yellow ( most aggro) without the black back. The largest of the three is the least aggro.
