Hawaiian Dragon Moray Eel? 125g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well said, VLD. Yeah, you got a 'well said' from a teenager! :) It makes life worse for good teens when others are irresponsible, even with fish.

"What? So I should not just get into swf?"
No you should act responsible though and not make a commitment to care for a living creature and expect to do it part time.

"Should teenagers just not get into saltwater?"
If they are not mature enough to accept and understand that the level of care needed to keep some animals is extensive and requires a lot of time, then Yes.

"I'm sorry but that is one of the worst statements I heard."
I doubt it. Actually, it's the most honest and basic comments you will ever hear. Truth is always tough to hear. If you don't like the results of a question you asked why does that make it wrong? (No reply really needed as it's not meant to be answered)

Well said VL...I agree with you 100%.

If you're willing to commit to this animal all the way...no shortcuts...then I say go for it. But buying an animal with the assumption that, 'I'll keep it for a couple of years and then dump it', is not being responsible.

There are plenty of people, on MFK even, that question buying fish they can't properly care for and get negative responses...sometimes flamed. Granted, I'm not a fan of flaming because it can discourage people from keeping more advanced fish...but even more than that...I don't like seeing a fish being kept in improper conditions.

Wow, feeling the love here...

From my experience with eels in general i would recommend against the HDME right now. A snowflake is a good start and that will keep you plenty busy. I also agree that you should not go with more than 4 predators in that current tank. besides the filtration you will just have too many fish trying to establish territory in 5-6 feet of space.

I am all about helping anyone get into reefkeeping but you really need to take baby steps when it comes to this. I think a good plan with 4 good fish will be a great start. something like:

Lionfish
Snowflake Eel
Puffer
Dragon Wrasse
(No Angel, too finiky)

these are cool fish that will not cost you a ton of money and will eat together and clean up each others messes. when you get in a more stable situation with a bigger tank then totally go for it!

Well the HDME's chances went down, because I doubt I'll see the one on ebay again. Man I'm suprised how much flaming I got on here. I'm going to stick with this site, because it is a great site, but my personal view of it went way down. I'm not one of those irresponsible teenagers, if you knew me from other sites I'm on, then you'd realize that. I've gotten complimented from a guy who said, he'd never expect me being a teenager and said he wishes he was as mature as I am when he was my age. I was very honored with such a compliment.

But if you guys think I'm an irresponisble teen for waging the possibilties of keeping a fish, not even bought one yet, then you're intitled to have your opinion. I'm intitled to have mine.

My dad and I are considering the possibilty of getting a 180g, and I saw some fire coral eels that were pretty cool at the lfs, pretty small good sized, so I'm just considering possiblities.

Well - yes it's possible for teens can handle SW aquariums.

Still I do agree - the best Eel for someone to begin with is the Snowflake. They are cool looking - fairly cheap, and yet a fairly docile species that's fairly easy to take care of.

IMO - Dragon Morays are best suited for experienced Moray Eel Keepers only.

And I also agree that a 125 gallon only needs about 4 aggressive (or semi-aggressive) fishes - no more.

And truthfully - Weighing the possibilities, & asking questions before actually buying a fish - is actually a smart thing to do, and shows real maturity. Much better than - buying the fish - then asking questions - after it's in your tank.

You didn't get flamed here man. Well, that guy whats his face did on page 4 or 5. I forget. But mostly you got honest, blunt responses from people who care about the fishs well being. This is coming from a fellow teenager, mind you. And would if you lost a 500 dollar fish? Youre parents wouldnt be too happy.

Again, PM me if you need help with darts in the future. Or any herps for that matter.

The only thing I need to say about this whole incident is the fact that Mike always tends to "dream" about alot of things. For a long time he kept asking questions about Sharks and building a pond when infact he knew it wasn't a possibility. He keeps saying he is going to buy a new tank, but then changes his mind all over again. No one has problems with answering your questions but why don't you sit down with your parents talk about what could realistically work then come ask the questions. I don't want you turning out to be one of our "Skylar" or "Blake" friends.

That's why I was asking if the HDME can go in a 125g because I have the tank. It's not some big pond I will someday have. And almost all teenagers have their dream pond. I would think you would have realized that on SRC with all the teens that will some day be able to carry out there dream, but presently, can just dream. And I think most adults that have a tank dream of one day having a large setup.
Sklyar? Blake? I have been talking with my dad too. He wants a reef and me to keep my fishes, so I'm thumbling over possibilties.

Nothing wrong with "dreaming" either. I think what Brenden's pointing out - Is that when it comes to set up a tank - Just keep it realistic.

After all - plenty of people have a success "aggressive" predatory FOWLR tank - in the range of 75-180 gallons. And are perfectly happy doing so. Just don't attempt to overload the tank or keep species that you may not be suited to handle. I think that what everyones basically pointing out.

Dreaming is fine, just keep it off the boards and in your head. It gets annoying after a while and it is often viewed as spamming which can get you banned. "Blake" and "Skylar" were members around the same age as you which did what you are doing on a bit of a higher scale and found them selves both banned. I just think its better if you figure out what you can forsurely do and then focus on that. This way you do not waste your own time and the MFK members time. Again no one minds giving you help its what we are here for just try and keep the "dreaming" to a minimum until you are forsure you can do it.
