According to fishbase.org (http://fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=4684) the heaviest published weight of a Parachromis Mang. is 3lbs 7.75oz (1580 grams)

Doesn't that seem a bit on the skinny side to anyone else? I have seen pictures of large Jags that appear to be bigger than that.

Fishbase.org also states the the max length for a Jag is about 21 inches (55 cm)

I have to think that a 20+ inch Jag is going to weigh 3+ plus pounds.

What are your thoughts.

I can tell you that 3 1/2 LBS is a huge fish! I do agree with you though, That seems an incredible low end for a world record.

Give you a sample of a couple fish I caught well over 20 pounds!

No way did you catch a 20 lb jag

I caught a 19" jag fishing down in miami a few years ago. I would think that thing had to weigh more than 3 pounds. It was long, tall, and fat at the same time.

He didn't say that he did, he was just posting some pics of large fish for size reference.

My bad. The pics didn't work the first time. Bad reference though. Those aren't shaped anything like a jag. Some type of grouper would be a better reference.

Like drgnfrc13 said, I was just posting pictures of fish species that I had caught in the 20-40" range that both weighed well over 20 pounds each.

The striped bass (bottom picture) was closer to 30 pounds (which we had 30' leaders on the trolling setup. It was a beast and quite a challenge hand retrieving the last 30' of this beast into the boat!

No exageration! The minimum summer "keeper" size in Maryland for Rockfish (Striped Bass) is 18" with a 2 creel limit. I can tell you for 100% certain that I have literally caught and released hundreds and hundreds of small "keeper" stripers in the 18 to 21" range and have even had chunky throwback juviniles under 18" that were well over four pounds.

I think that I am beginning toi understand the challenge that I am having with darn near every similar sized fish I own beating the crap out of my Jaguar cichlikd. (Thread is posted in this CA/SA cichlid forum).

The Jaguar must have a swim bladder 4X the size of an ordinary fish, The fish species HAS TO BE virtually hollow! It now makes sense how a 4" Jaguar (say 1 ounce) doesn't stand a snowflakes chance in hell of hanging with a similar sized African Leaf Fish, Electric Blue Jack Dempsy, Firemouth, Dovi, Tilapi... that are probably over 2 ounces each.

I was using length and visual girth to assess the (similar sized) fish to choose as tankmates for the Jaguar. As with ANY combat sport (Boxing, kick boxing m.t. JuJitsu, Wrestling, MMA... The similar sized combatants are ALWAYS grouped by weight and NEVER by height.
