Don't over-do it on the water changes; that can re-start your nitrogen cycle. If you are having ammonia problems, only change 20% of the water, once a day (unless it is an emergency, I know it's hard but you have to let your tank cycle). Don't over-do it with prime, although I've never actually heard of a case of poisoning. Keep the tank at 3lbs/100 gallons of kosher salt, keep it dark and make a constant supply of food available (black worms are best in this case, because they don't quickly spoil). Post pics and updates, and I hope the little one pulls through.

That's wierd... you sure you don't have anything rotting underneath the sand or somewhere in the filter. It's probably because your nitrogen cycle is not fully established. As said by abortedsoul, frequently change a small portion of the water and don't over feed him. Good luck!

thank u for the replys is there anything i can do to bring the nitrites an nitrates down right now?

ok so now my HOB whisper filter stopped working im going to run to petco up the street to get another filter in alittle while all thats currently running on there now is a cascade 1000 canister will this be ok for a couple hours? or MAYBE even tomorow? will another canister filter be a better route to go? o man frustration is starting.. in the first 2 weeks things went fine!!

Get a Fluval FX5 (or comparable canister filter) or better yet simply set up a wet/dry using a pump, a rubbermaid bin and a few gallons of mixed up bioballs/pot scrubbers/ceramic biomax.

Note: I just researched your filter, and it might be fine until morning. Make sure to squeeze out all of the filter junk from your HOBs before they dry out and put it in your canister filter.

Rays produce A LOT of ammonia, and it is no joke that rays need a well-cycled tank to live in. Their bioload is crazy, especially if you over-feed them.

i was just alittle to late for ur post anyways i went to petco and returned the HOB that came with tank and they gave me credit and i picked up a fluval 305 it was the only canister left other then a broken cascade like mine now (the latches were broken) anyways i got it for a good price from the manager i got $60 credit on the HOB whisper and paid an extra 20 an got this fluval 305 dont ask me how that worked seeing how the fluvals price tag was $139 or $149 i forget now! anyhow i set it up per the directions! i dont care for the outlet it spits bubbles every 45-60secs briefly and just doesnt seem right! O-WELL hopefully it will work /last longer! now if i can get my water problem under control

make sure your lid on the 305 is seated properly and all the hoses are clamped tightly
that will more than likly solve your bubble problems unless you have your intake even somewhat close to one of your bubble wands, if thats the case, that might be your problem.

anyways, you still might want to check into a sump filter.
they are so so easy to make and help a great deal with bio filtration.
if you dont care about the looks of them you can make one for like $100-$150
most expencive part will be the pump.
the DIY section has alot of great info, thats where i went to make mine and it works like a champ (best thing i ever did for my tank)

so would i maybe be better off taking this fluval back and just building a sump? for the little xtra cost and then run the cascade and the sump? are there detailed plans on a diy sump? ive been reading alittle on it.

well its up to you, the more filtration the better, and if your going to be getting more rays and bigger tanks your gonna need more filtration anyways.
and yes there are some great plans in the DIY section on how to build sumps ( or even google it) though you will pry find over 100 different sump filters on here anyways.
wet/dry sumps
wet sumps
wet/dry with fuge.
all sorts of stuff

use the search feature and search for those things. there are a ton of people on here who have made there own. ( wet/dry would pry be best for you for now)
i have made a wet sump and have had good luck with it as well though. so it just depends on what you want

its alot easyer than it looks. i was pretty sceptical at first when i started looking in to making mine, but the more reading i did the easyer it all became.
and if nothing comes to your liking post back and i'll take you through how to build one.
