Help! Atlantic Stingray curling!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At this point, personally I would try something different. How about eliminating factors?

If you are doing a lot of waterchanges... stop. Watch the animal - and let that guide for doing them. If it doesn't get worse, don't do one. There could be something in your water impacting her that you just don't see. Could be preventing the cycle from happening correctly. Slowly add salt to keep that level coming up. It will help ease the stress on the ray. Get it up to 1.010, then to .015 the next day, then .020 and so on. keep it at .025 in the long run.

Do a once a day feeding (a light feeding) to help prevent excess ammonia building up.

ok. thank you :) I just stopped into a LFS that has exotic stuff. They USED to (like a year ago) have two atlantic stingrays. they said theirs would curl up all the time when the salt levels got too low. I showed them the picture of her curling down. They said bad water is usually not THAT MUCH of a curl. They claim shes making a "tent" to trap fish and its wierdo Atlantic behavior....ANY THOUGHTS on that THEORY?

Think my soft water has something to do with it? I only use the soft water when I add salt.

I have no idea what to do with saltwater rays, but I can say that with raykeeping in general you should try to stay calm and eliminate extra factors. Keep it simple, keep your water free of chlorine/chloramine, and don't do too much too fast. Zoodiver seems like a great voice to pay attention to when it comes to rays and saltwater creatures, and luckily you have a critter that qualifies as both.

Take deep breaths, best of luck! :)

If there is food in the tank and she 'traps' it like that - it would be normal. If you see her 'blowing' into the substrate, then arching like that, it would be normal as well.
If she's just doing it randomly, I'd say that's not too normal.

What's your water source when mixing new water for the tank?

When I do my water changes, I use the outside faucet. I have a special hose I run throught the house. When I'm topping off the tank, from evaporation or just taking a bucket to 10% of the water, I use the kitchen sink, which is soft water. Did you see the picture of her? she looks like she had a stroke. And I even put my hand in the tank and pushed her....she didnt move. But there is no live food in there for her to trap. its scallops and krill right now....

Its frustrating when your trying so hard. I think im trying TOO hard and making it worse. I'll still with doing nothing right now and see what happens. The only thing I can think that she would eat to make her arch, is the blood worms. And keep in mind, I cant see those things in the rock.....
