so, just checked the nitrates again, still through the roof. checked tap water, fine, checked it warm, also, to make sure it wasn't the hot water heater, just incase. ran tap water through my python to check that (it is pretty yucky looking, it was all negative. checked my angel fish tank, nitrates also higher than h*ll. but they are all perfectly healthy. On a lighter note, my big guy is no longer having the swimming problem, but looks burnt and peeling, and still won't eat. I am going to take the carbon out of the filter. I have some pothos, I can put in there. Water changes, so far have failed to bring down the nitrates at all. And I probably shouldn't do one right at the moment, should I, since I just put in the prime about 3 hours ago? Just did one yesterday at about this time.

Make sure you are testing correctly, nitrates are the worst to test. 10 drops of bottle #1, shake bottle #2 for 30 seconds. Then add 10 drops and shake test tube for a minute. Wait 5 mins. I dont see how the nitrates are climbing that fast if hes not eating. Do a 50% now and another in 3-4 hours.

yes, that is exactly how I am doing the tests

I have absolutely NO idea what is going on! He does seem to be feeling somewhat better, but still won't eat. Just did a water change, gonna do another around 8:30 or 9:00. in about 3 hours. I just love this fish. I don't want him to die. The stuff on his skin didn't show up until I put in the epsom salt. He was having trouble swimming. We don't have that problem anymore, but now this skin thing.

I wouldn't recommend moving him either. Moving him will cause him stress and an ammonia problem in a new tank is much more difficult to work with than a nitrate problem. Just add the prime when you do water changes, I figured it would be worth a shot. It's not harmful to the fish at all.

Is it possible that those test kits like, stop working correctly? That nitrate problem is insanity.
