Wow, ok, well I'm going to go feed my barred midas (the one pictured in my avatar). :screwy:

I'll do the same then...

I can say that the wholesaler does carry rd's that are about to peel, but I'm still thinking it is a jag. Those rd's are several tanks down, and too far for a fish to jump, or for a migrant worker to accidentally grab. PetSmart only buys the "colored" rd's because the uncolored ones are too difficult for an untrained staff to sell. I also think that a better pic would be helpful. I would like to see pics of that fish in a few months as well. Nice fish fishfreak317, it has turned into a real beast.

Look fivespeed, I know that you are determined to explain how this fish is a jag. But, since you are basing that solely on the elongated shape of the fish, don't you think it's possible that the digital image may have been stretched or distorted in some way? I understand where you're coming from with this but, there's just no jag out there with those markings. I don't care if it's a juvenile or a 16" maxed out monster.

Yeah, it's a Jag - You have the nicest Jag on MFK in your avatar.

I work at petsmart, and I cna tell you that we DO get Rds/midas like that every once in a while, and they normally turn red as they get older. Midas/Rd have variable color, there is no guarantee what they will look like when they get older.

We had a barred midas last year, was about 5 inches before it got sold.

Yea Petsmart CAN have Barred Midas. Barred Midas can come from colored Midas it's just rare. And when you consider that the Petsmart Midas are RD/Midas hybrids it's totally plausible that this is a Barred RD/Midas but like nomadofthehills said, they change colors so chances are this'll end up being a normal looking RD/Midas.

Wow. I'm flattered at the interest everone has taken to this thread. I will try and post a better picture, but the little guy is really shy and hides a lot.

i agree with hawkfish3.0.all you have to do is look at his avatar and look back at the pic of the little fish and you can immediatly see the similarities.they both have red eyes and bars, and have the same color backround scales

Here's some updated pictures of the little guy:
