Help Me Decide on Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I messed around with a PVC overflow. Made one out of 1 1/4" PVC. I tested it and it flows really well but I haven't glued anything yet. I wanted to put up a picture of how it looks and get some feedback on wether I can make it better in any way. What do you guys think?

Ok cool thanks. I think I'm going to build one more and up my flow. I've gotta go get some bulkheads and drill a union between my two totes hopefully today. How do you keep the air from building up in the over flow? I was thinking about just hooking up a power head to it or maybe and aqua lifter pump.

The aqualift pump seems to be the best route. However ive been up and running for a week, it hasnt stopped or slowed and i just use a splitter for air pumps. Suck the air out and close the valve.

From what i know from experience from work (soy milk extracting) as long as your overflow is deep enough it will help with flow but also decrease the chance bubbles have of making it to the bottom of the U on the overflow, and any tiny bubbles will likely follow the water right out instead of getting trapped up top. If that makes sence.

I did my overflows right to the bottom of the aquarium. And i leave about 1/4" below the trim on the top for setting water height. Its easily 22-23" tall and that may be why i havnt had a problem.

Well I think I got it dialed for now.
One 1 1/4" overflow.
Turn over isn't the best through the sump. Maybe only doing 500-600 gph max. I have great circulation within the tank itself though. The one powerhead I have is capable of pushing a little more than 1500 gph.

Tell me if I'm thinking wrong but I know with all my reef tanks my turnover through my sump was minimal compared to the movement I had within the tank and all my reefs did amazing. Is it different though with freshwater? Do I want high turnover through the sump?
