Help please. Fish I got today looks to have a few problems.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hope it will pull thru.

Sometimes the damaged fins will flake off before being replaced by new growth - happened to mine before once or twice.

Is this what you meant when you said it flakes off? It looks like the dead tissue is breaking away or falling off of the fish. Is this a good sign that the dead tissue is falling away to allow the fin to regrow? Or is it a sign of the condition worsening? Thanks

Yes. Same as your pics. Happened to my gar and a wolf fish before - but it wasn't ammonia burn as suspected in your case. Just some terrible fights that occurred.

The whitish part is somehow like dead "cells / skin / fin". It will fall away eventually. You have observe whether it will "eat" or creep into the other part of the tail - that might be infection or something not good.

Meantime, do keep the water in tip top condition and hope the fish heals itself fast enough.

This can happen with elongs, and red tail barracudas. just good water quality and some aquarium salt should do the trick. Piranhas heal very good on there own. Don't dose your tank with to many meds. Sometimes that can make things worse.

I would do a 50%-75% water change daily while dosing with salt for a week. Should clear up the ammonia burn.
Clean water!Clean water!Clean water!
Salt for healing

Thanks again everyone
So I may have jumped the gun and did a half dose of tetracycline yesterday and another half a dose this afternoon. Should I stop or continue with the directions on the box besides cutting the dose in half. Something is working right I guess so I'm not sure if it was the clean water or the tetracycline?

Quit adding som many damn meds!
Listen to C caribemob just salt and water changes.
