I would have thought the idea with scooping out the stone with a container and putting a filter and air stone would have worked. What will you be doing differently next time?
i dont think so, actually i dont think so at all, not unless i used water from the original tank and had the exact same params, and temp, and then you run the chance of crushing all the eggs not on the slate with the loose gravel and on top of that, you run the risk of loosing the bond between the pair, which in my eyes is not worth any amount of fry, compared to the bonded pair, the fry are worthless to me
not to mention, it takes away from the natural behavior of the fish, if you take the eggs away from them, how are they ever gonna learn how to raise and protect the fry properly on their own? and then you dont get to study how they are as parents or anything, which is my whole reason for doing it
so i guess if you were smart about it and was doing it for profit only then yes that would be worth it, but not if your doing it just to satisfy your own hunger for knowledge of their behavior naturally, well as natural as it can be being in a aquarium
end of rant lol
if i did anything different the only things would be- to have them by themselves, and to be more observant
