Hi everyone! Huuuuuge fish noob and forum noob here please bear with me. I work at a fish conservation lab at my uni and I'm concerned for this lungfish we have.

To get straight to the point we have an African lungfish who I haven't seen eat in months (we feed reptile pellets and worms which it used to happily eat) and has a sheer white film across some of its facial pores as well as the top of its head and back. 3 of his fins have also curled in on themselves. This all happened after we moved it into a larger tank which I'm guessing had some contaminated rocks or the tank wasn't cleaned properly (there used to be two turtles in it). We moved it into a new 10 gal tank filled less than halfway which I treated with methyl blue and 1/2 of a Jungle fungal tablet. It's got an air stone and heater and some rocks I've disinfected so it can hide and use to prop itself up to breathe. It's been there for about 3 days now with no difference in the affected areas. It's been coming up to the surface to breathe a lot and moves around quite a bit. Still not interested in eating. I've researched a bit and wonder if it has columnaris or a fungus of the sort? My boss (the ichthyology professor) says it has fin rot and that's why the fins are curled up.

Any advice, direction, and information on what I should do is greatly appreciated. I'm just a concerned lab technician who got incredibly attached to this cute lungfish and am willing to try and learn how to make it feel better and live a happy life.Thank you!!

-The temp of the water is around 78-79 with the heater in.
-I'll try my best to get other specs and somehow figure out how to put photos on here without it telling me I can't because I "don't have the minimum requirements to use a link" as soon as I come in early tomorrow.
-If I can edit this post later I'll add in questions people ask asap.

Water Parameters:

-78-79F with the heater in.

-NO3: 0

-NO2: 0-0.5

-pH: 6.0-7.0

-KH: 80

-GH: 180

-Salinity: 1.04sg

Sorry guys I still can't add a photo. I'm a bit irritated with that rule. I may just move on to another website where I can post pictures. If there is still no response to this after a week or so, administrators please feel free to delete this post.

Don't give up on no responses yet though I understand your concern.

I think you need 5 posts before you can post pics.

Thanks you guys. I have some good news at least. It looks like the medicine is working! The white on its face has slightly less coverage and the fin curled up fins are rolling back out. Though I don't know if I'm supposed to dose anymore methyl blue and fungus cure or not. Neither package gives any directions about its duration. It's been a week now since I've put it in and I don't want to harm the lungfish somehow.

Follow the directions for either medication. Prior to more dosing, I would do at least a 25% water change in between dosing.

Generally, I give the medication a week to see if it is doing anything. If nothing is happening, then its time to try new medication.

Yeah, the back of the medication doesn't tell me if or when I should second dose it which is weird. I went ahead and gave a second dose and will do a 25% water change when I come in on Monday (4 days later). The lil guy is looking better already so I feel relived! I was sure I wasn't going to be able to help with my lack of fish care knowledge. Thank you for your advice~

oooooHH!! I can put photos now YES! The top image is when we first got it. The last two is how he looks now. The white is more faded now thank goodness. I guess now I know the medicine is working do the water parameters look ok?

so luckily these guys die slowly. I would guess water quality issues and unclycled tank. You shouldn't have any nitrite reading if cycled. Continue with good water changes and get the water quality back to no ammonia and no nitrite. You listed Nitrite and Nitrate. what is your ammonia?
