Help stock a 125-150 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Vieja can be very aggressive, I wouldn't do a large vieja with Acara's, heckelli and rainbows. If you wanted to do the vieja, I would up the aggression of your small cichlid choices a little bit. Sajica would still be fine, for the others I would look to thoricthys and cryptoheros/salvini, nicaraguense, things like that. Pearsei are another large choice which are less aggressive than Viejas. And I still think you'd be better off avoiding two males of the same species (sajica)

EDIT- didn't see your latest post. That stock list looks fine, And Heckelli would be a good choice

Thank you Gourami Swami Gourami Swami . the more I've thought about it the more I'd really like to try a vieja. I've had folks on this thread comment and seen other places that say the heterospila (now under the genus oscura?) is a pretty peaceful one and stays smaller than the rest (still large though at around 10 inches). I really like the coloration of it as well. So with that in mind, getting rid of some of the more calm fish could I do something like this? With diamond tetras for dithers and hoplos for scavengers? If the Heckelii won't work with the Heterospila do you have a suggestion for another fish that would? I assumed since I was sticking with an 18 inch deep tank that something like a pearsei would be too large.

2 Gold Severums
1 Heterospila
1 Blood Parrot
1 Heckelii

I have never kept a heterospila, so can't be much help with that particular fish. If they are anything like regani's (on the peaceful end of the vieja spectrum), then I think your stock list looks fine. Just keep an eye on the Heckelli- though I recently kept one with all central americans and he did just fine.

I was also considering a regani (so pretty) but saw there was really mixed reviews on those on this forum as some had murderous ones and some were quite placid

So I'm coming closer to convincing the wife of getting a 135g but I'm foreseeing some bargaining that may have to happen with the stock. She's always wanted an Oscar. While, personally, i don't mind them I'd like to figure out a stock that would work for them. Right away I know the diamond tetras and hoplos would need to be rehomed.

A) If i left one of the Gold Severums in the 75 with a Sajica pair would that be ok?

B) Would this stocking be ok for an Oscar in the 125

1 Tiger Oscar
1 V. Heterospilus
1 Blood Parrot
1 Gold Severum
2 Featherfin Catfish (I'm assuming the hoplos would be too small and would eventually get eaten)

Wish there was a way I could fit a chocolate cichlid in.

So been thinking about this tank some and I'd like to try this stock. Thoughts?

1 Tiger Oscar
1 V. Heterospilus
1 Blood Parrot
1 Chocolate Cichlid
Some sort of catfish that would be ok (2 featherfins or 3 multis or 3-4 pictus) open to suggestions on this one

Would this stock be feasible?

Personally I am not a fan of mixing sa with ca cichlids, oscar, severum, chocolate or heterospila, saljica.

The last idea would be almost 100% CA except the chocolate. I had seen others keep chocolates with melanuras which is what gave me the idea. Would post 37 be overstocked? Should I consider a different CA smaller cichlid than rainbows or would they be ok in that mix? Would firemouths be better? I've decided to keep sajica in another tank so likely none will be here.

Post 37 sounds okay although I see you put 2 Viejas, I wouldn't go that route. Either they will breed and throw a wrench in the mix, or one will bully the other. I would do #37 but with one vieja. Nothing wrong with mixing ca and sa as long as the temperaments are similar.
