Help stock a 125-150 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not being a smart ass when I say this, but good luck actually finding Heterospila. I've been on the hunt for months, COTA has them but minimum order makes it tough.

Thanks for the tips. As for getting hets I've got a couple local guys that I'm going in on with a group order with cota so hopefully that won't be an issue.

I threw in 2 vieja hets because i thought they were peaceful enough to coexist with the others. If not then I'll definitely do 1. Any suggestions on something i can replace it with? 2nd bp? Severum?

Would a bocourti work if I could find one for a 125? Everything I can find on them says they are very mild.

1 V. Heterospila
1 BP
1 Chocolate
1 Bocourti
2-3 Rainbow Cichlids
2-3 Hoplo Cats

They do but they have massive proportion in every other way.I also think a 14 inch fish is a little on the large side with other stock.
It's all personal taste but I don't like mixing cichlids from other continents.
You seem to like Severums, why not do a small group of sevs a school of diamond tetras and a few festivums.
It would make a much more natural display of fish with similar water and temperature requirements.
I would definitely drop blood parrots, purely because they are hideous. I guess we all have different tastes though.
You could also have a few small south American catfish with this stock and far fewer potential aggression problems.

Thank you for the suggestion but the whole point of this tank was to keep a bp and a v. Heterospilus. I'm just looking for 2 more large fish to put with them. I really like chocolates and have seen a few tanks on here and other places of then with melenarus so i figured they were a feasible addition. I know they are sa but i want to try to put them in if they can work. I'd like to get one more large ish fish in there if i can. I put the rainbows in there for some activity and color but they cab easily be removed

Sevs will be in a different tank

That is likely what will happen. I will more than likely end up with 3-4 1-2 inchers and start them off in a 40b. Then a 55, then the 125. But once they make it to the 125, I'd like to have some other fish with them, not just a species tank. I know BP's are not a fan favorite but I have kept them in the past and would like to keep 1 again. And I've admired chocolates for a long time. So if I kept a couple of other big fish in there (BP and Chocolate) I assumed I would only have room for 1 or 2 heterospilas. Would a nic make sense for a fourth fish? I would prefer to keep multiple hets but i figured a 125-150 would only allow me to keep 1 with other big species. Thank you again for all of your help. It is much appreciated.

Would a nic be feasible?

1 V. Heterospilas
1 Chocolate
1 BP
1 Nic
3-4 Rainbow Cichlids (if i have the room) or some other small cichlid (open to suggestions)
3 Hoplo Cats
